Ringmaster: Vince McMahon and the Unmaking of America | Abraham Riesman
3 posts | 3 read | 1 to read
Riveting, essential reading. Rick Perlstein, author of Reaganland The definitive biography of Vince McMahon, former WWE chairman and CEO, charts his rise from rural poverty to the throne of one of the worlds most influential media empiresand features never-before-seen research and exclusive interviews with more than 150 people who witnessed, aided, and suffered from his ascent. Even if youve never watched a minute of professional wrestling, you are living in Vince McMahons world. In his four decades as the defining figure of American pro wrestling, McMahon was the man behind Dwayne The Rock Johnson, Stone Cold Steve Austin, John Cena, Dave Bautista, Bret The Hitman Hart, and Hulk Hogan, to name just a few of the mega-stars who owe him their careers. For more than twenty-five years, he has also been a performer in his own show, acting as the diabolical Mr. McMahona figure who may have more in common with the real Vince than he would care to admit. Just as importantly, McMahon is one of Donald Trumps closest friendsand Trumps experiences as a performer in McMahons programming were, in many ways, a dress rehearsal for the 45th Presidents campaigns and presidency. McMahon and his wife, Linda, are major Republican donors. Linda was in Trumps cabinet. McMahon makes deals with the Saudi government worth hundreds of millions of dollars. And for generations of people who have watched wrestling, he has been a defining cultural force. Accessible to anyone, regardless of wrestling knowledge, Ringmaster is an unauthorized, independent, investigative chronicle of Vince McMahons origins and rise to supreme power. It is built on exclusive interviews with more than 150 people, from McMahons childhood friends to those who accuse him of destroying their lives. Far more than just an athletics or entertainment biography, Ringmaster uses Vinces story as a new lens for understanding the contemporary American apocalypse.

There is so much that is problematic about Vince McMahon and about professional wrestling. And still, somehow, Donald Freakin‘ Trump has to infiltrate.

He has been a pompous asshole since he was a kid. Source, this friend.

Mehso-so

Mixed feelings. I liked the 80s-90s parts that were what I remembered from my youth, my bf‘s rewatches or saw on Young Rock; getting more context there was fun.

I already know Vince is nuts. John Oliver Last Week Tonight in 2019 illustrated this perfectly in under 30 mins

I expected more insight to the political affiliations &media manipulation based on the title &that was not the main focus. There was way more about Bret Hart than Donald Trump.

Pickpick

⭐️⭐️⭐️ From little Vinnie Lupton to “Mr McMahon,” and sadly, from an abused child to an abusive adult. I now know more about professional wrestling than necessary, but those were the fascinating bits of this biography. McMahon is manipulative, power hungry, and not a good human. And he‘s friends with Donald Trump, so that should tell you something. #RIPOwenHart

5feet.of.fury As I‘m sitting here waiting for Wrestlemania to start, I‘m being a little bit of a hypocrite, but Vince is a nut. I gotta check this out! 13mo
britt_brooke @5feet.of.fury It‘s totally allowed! 😂 He is a nut for sure. That‘s honestly the best description. 13mo
Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick @5feet.of.fury Same. I respect the company he built, but he's unhinged, for sure. 13mo

britt_brooke @Kelly_the_Bookish_Sidekick That‘s fair, too! Unhinged is another great descriptor. 13mo
Suet624 Trump was actually a character in “the show”, fighting against Vince. I kept wondering why Trump was so popular and then I‘d remember seeing the large numbers of raving fans in the stands as Trump did his wrestling schtick and think oh, it‘s them. 13mo
britt_brooke @Suet624 Ha, yep! 😬😩 13mo
