Head Like a Hole
Head Like a Hole: A Novel of Horror | Andrew Van Wey
6 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
When you bury your past, make sure that it's dead. It's the mid-nineties. Grunge and flannel are fading as the Spice Girls and Hot Topic conquer the malls. Cherry gloss glistens on the lips of the youth. Modems hiss as America comes online. And in a fog-drenched cove at the edge of New England, something terrible awakens when a fisherman reels in a gruesome catch: the remains of a young woman. Remains still pulsing with furious life. For Megan Monroe and her friends, this is how their nightmare begins: a wet whisper over their shoulder, a dark hand reaching out from the edge of their sight, and a name clawing at the back of their minds. A young woman scratched from their memory. To stop this devouring terror, Megan will need to mend broken friendships and reassemble her fractured past, for what stalks them hungers to remake itself in their image... piece by bloody piece. Dig into the haunted past with Head Like a Hole, a novel of malignant secrets, shattered friendships, and twisted bodily horror.

This spooky story is framed around a podcast interview, drawing you right in. The bulk of the book unfolds across New England after a strange head is pulled up from the depths. The 90s nostalgia gives this added fun- though the head-hopping and perspective changes don‘t lend themselves well to audio. The body count (including a dog, so beware!) rises as secrets from the past emerge. Original and gory, this grabs attention from start to finish!

LiseWorks The cover looks so nice, I love seahorses. ❤️ I hate it when dogs get killed in a book. I keep saying, "Oh no, not the dog." 5mo
TorieStorieS @LiseWorks Oh this isn‘t the cover- for audiobooks, I always post a picture I colored while listening! But yes- I always try to call out violence to animals in particular since I know so many people feel the same way and it‘s not always called out! 5mo
LiseWorks Oh that is a beautiful colored pic. It's so intricate. 5mo
TorieStorieS @LiseWorks Thank you!! I love mixing markers with watercolors! ❤️ 5mo

Audiobook pick:
This was pretty good. Picture a combination of The Grudge, I Know What You Did Last Summer, and throw in some HP Lovecraftian Horror. Loved all the 90s references, including the music. I graduated in 1996 and this book captured the time period well. Only issue, a lot of POV changes which can get to be a bit much...

This book is really weird. I think I‘m going to love it! Maybe it will finally break my reading slump. I don‘t think I‘ve read 6 books this year. 😬

5feet.of.fury Oooh creepy cover! 11mo

Indie Author Brawl! This was a great book. The nostalgia was fun, since I‘m about the same age as the characters; I was a teen in the 90s. But the…monster? Creature? Ghost?…was excellent. Very creepy. The ending had some fun twists, and overall it had a good amount of gore. Also, the cover!! ❤️❤️❤️

IamIamIam Oh my goodness, you're in BoH too??? 😁☠️ 11mo
Lauranahe Yes! I‘m loving the indie author brawl. I ordered a shirt and I can‘t wait for it to come! What‘s your favorite book so far?? Mine is probably stolen tongues, with Ghostland close behind. 11mo

5/5⭐️

It has been a while since a book has grabbed me the way this book did. I didn't even want to go to bed because I needed to know what was going to happen next. This book was captivating and creepy. The unexpected twist at the end caught me surprised. It was a wild ride, and I enjoyed every minute of it. This is my first book by this author, and I can't wait to read more of his work.
