A clumsy-looking parcel beneath contained Edward's present, a funny one for September, but what had been his sister's ambition for the last two winters, --a pair of bright skates with all the newest improvements; then there was "Wynnie's work case neatly finished off, which gave a little pang of remembrance, and was quickly pushed out of sight under the loose papers which had covered the others. There were two or three more little presents from her aunt and cousins, and at last out came the parcel she had been looking for all the time, the one addressed in Eose's writing. Her fingers trembled so much that she could not untie the string; her mamma noticed how she fumbled with it, and fancied it was her gratitude and excitement that made her clumsy. "Cut it, dear," she said, "it is extremely kind of Miss Graham to think of you; did you know she left it yesterday?" Beatrice muttered something inaudible as she opened the parcel and took from its covering a beautiful edition of Longfellow's poems, brilliant in blue and gold, and filled with good engravings. "Just what you wanted, Beatie;" said Edward, who had been waiting, cap in hand, to see what it was. "A very handsome and kind present," said her father, " I hope you will thank Miss Graham for it this evening." Ah, those thanks, how they weighed upon Beatrice! what would she not have given to have escaped them; the thought that they had to come accompanied her all through her morning's pleasure, the drive, and shopping with her mamma; and through the afternoon's prepar...
