The long-awaited founding of Valdemar comes to life in this second book in the new series from a New York Times-bestselling author and beloved fantasist. Baron Valdemar and his people have found a temporary haven, but it cannot hold all of them, or for long. Trouble could follow on their heels at any moment, and there are too many people for Crescent Lake to support. Those who are willing to make a further trek by barge on into the West will follow him into a wilderness depopulated by war and scarred by the terrible magics of a thousand years ago and the Mage Wars. But the wilderness is not as "empty" as it seems. There are potential friends and rapacious foes.... ....and someone is watching them.

Just popping in to say hello! Show season has started and I've been crazy busy and haven't kept up with Litsy the way I'd like to. (And yes, I owe some people #LitsyLove letters, too)

Pippin and I have taken the evening off and are cuddled up reading the latest Valdemar trilogy and drinking tea.

AmyG Enjoy, you two. Hope the season is going well! 1mo
GondorGirl @AmyG It is! But four shows in five weeks is exhausting and I'm ready for a few days off. 1mo

It's challenging to make a prequel - especially about the founding of a land so well established in the rest of the series! - unexpected, but Lackey pulls it off in this book. A nice balance between familiar elements and delving into the struggles of these particular characters.

This sequel to BEYOND marks the next stage into the Founding of Valdemar. This is such a nostalgic read for me that I have no choice but to just love it! Yes, it starts out slowly and the mundane details of moving 15k people bogs down the pacing a bit, but I just adored the last quarter of it! It was really like finding a new old friend and makes me just want to dig out all the earlier books and treat myself to a huge re-read! Maybe later in 2023!
