These two gifts are so special they deserved their own post! 😍 I am so lucky to have gotten both of these yesterday! They're both illustrated, and are absolutely gorgeous! The Silmarillion has the most gorgeous painted edges that I've ever seen! 💕📚💕 #bookhaul #christmasbookhaul

Leftcoastzen Holy crap! Gorgeous! 1y
CocoReads My husband got the Silmarillion too. It is beautiful 1y
Daisey I really want this new edition of the Silmarillion, but I keep telling myself I don‘t need multiple copies. 1y
Branwen @Leftcoastzen RIGHT?! I can't stop staring at it! It's so beautiful! 😍 @CocoReads It really is a treasure! @Daisey I totally think you should get it! You deserve this beautiful edition! 💕 And if it makes you feel any better, this is now my third different edition of The Silmarillion! 😂 1y

For a "standard" edition, HarperCollins have done a great job. I love the design of the title page, the colouring of the map of Númenor, the blue titles and chapter headings, together with Lee's pencil illustrations, and a splash of red for the Ring verse ? It also has a ribbon bookmark, and Lee's colour paintings, which I've deliberately not posted as finding them as you read is a particular pleasure for me, and perhaps for you, too.

Bookwomble My only gripe is that the colour illustrations are printed on the same paper stock as the text, rather than on glossy. 1y
vivastory Will definitely be adding to my holiday list! I would buy it but right now the Cormac McCarthy 2 book set is at the top of my list 1y
Bookwomble @vivastory We all have our own priorities 😁 1y

vivastory Have you seen the special edition Silmarillion? 1y
tpixie Lovely 😍 1y
Bookwomble @vivastory No - deliberately so. But to expensive for me. Don't look at what you can't have! 😉 1y
vivastory It is pretty costly! I'm crossing my fingers that B&N will have their post Xmas 50% off hardcover sale again 1y
Bookwomble @vivastory Let's hope 😊🤞 1y
Bookwomble @vivastory On the other hand, I bought a first edition hardback when the Silmarillion was originally published, so that's it's own thing 😁 1y
The_Book_Ninja Lovely review. I‘ve read the Hobbit about 20 times. I think 2023 will be the year I take on LOTR 1y
Bookwomble @The_Book_Ninja I'm sure you'll love it 😊 1y

House of Dragons & Rings of Power premiered around the same time. Since they started I have been watching 1 episode of both back to back each weekend. Which makes me think of a mashup. Second breakfast at King's Landing? Grimdark harfoots? 🤔

hannah-leeloo I've watched them both and love them 2y
vivastory @hannah-leeloo I love Rings of Power 👏 2y
TrishB Love House of the Dragon. Not been watching Rings of Power but hubby has and loving it. 2y

hannah-leeloo They've started filming season 2, it's going to be so good 2y
Bookwomble I wanted to like Rings of Power, but I've got up to episode six and find it boring, which even I think is weird, but there it is 🤷🏻‍♂️ I'll probably watch the rest at some point 2y
Soubhiville I‘ve been watching both as well, and I like your mashups. 🙂 2y
vivastory @TrishB There's a couple of special editions of Tolkien's work being released soon I have my eye on 2y
vivastory @Bookwomble Since you are so far into the season I think it's worth wrapping up at least this season 2y
vivastory @Soubhiville Thanks! Why should MCU get all the cross-overs? 😂 2y
vivastory @hannah-leeloo As soon as I finished season 1 I googled when season 2 would air 🤣 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory I will finish it. If they bring in Tom Bombadil they'll hook me back🪝😆 2y
vivastory @Bookwomble The profound influence of Kalevala on Tolkien is making me want to revisit the Finnish epic 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory I'd recommend reading Kalevala runos with a Sibelius soundtrack, given that we've been discussing music 😁 Have you read Tolkien's version of Kullervo? It feels a bit more polished than the Kalevala original, but I think I do prefer the latter. 2y
vivastory @Bookwomble I would take you up on your recommendation if it wasn't for the fact that I need silence when I read. I do have the Sibelus soundtrack on my Spotify library though & am eager to give it a listen! I have not read Kullervo. I don't recall who the translator of the Kalevala was when I read it years ago, but I know it wasn't Tolkien as I specifically recall it was an unabridged version. I would like to read some of Tolkien's translations. 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory As far as I know, Tolkien only translated the Kullervo section of the Kalevala, though he didn't complete it. He did integrate it into the legendarium as part of The Children of Húrin, with Túrin Turambar taking the Kullervo part (sorry, you probably know this). ... I can read without music, but prefer to have a soundtrack, and often sing along to songs at the same time as reading, though not if I actually try to! 2y

I just watched the series premiere of The Rings of Power & I am thoroughly impressed!! To all of the people who are review bombing it bc of the inclusion of more roles for women & POC, without actually paying attention to the actual show itself...🖕🖕🖕

Kenyazero Indeed! 2y
Susanita I love Disa! 2y
Twainy I just watched episode one. I liked it enough to watch episode 2 so I agree with you. 2y
CallMeIshmael I agree it‘s great 2y

Fortunately, the publication date of 10th November 2022 is after the projected end of my two-month book-buying ban!
This is previously published Tolkien material, with new commentary by the editor, Brian Sibley, and new artwork by Alan Lee.
I'll be reading this rather than getting an A****n Prime subscription 🧐

Bookwomble "Fortunate" for the ban, that is, cos I would be breaking that mutha for a Tolkien! ? 2y

Bookwomble @TrishB Mrs B refuses to buy me any more books until I've read all the ones I already have! 😆 2y
TrishB Dear me……I have no response that might not invoke divorce proceedings. 2y
Bookwomble @TrishB Ha, ha! I shouldn't take anything for granted, but after 37 years together I'm not out looking for a solicitor! 😁 Fortunately, I have a bookseller who automatically orders me anything from the House of Tolkien - easy money 💸 2y
vivastory I know that the upcoming show is based on various materials, but is it at least partially based on this one? This is the first I have heard of this one. I am very very intrigued. Adding to my TBR. 2y
Bookwomble @vivastory I'm unsure about the show - there's the usual gnashing of teeth about it not being true to the source material, but that's impossible to really judge until the show airs. As it's set in the Second Age, I assume that Númenor will feature to some degree, but I'm not following the trailers and press so I don't know. I'm unlikely to see it as it's on A****n 😏 2y
vivastory I hear you about avoiding it because of it being on Amazon. I did notice that it covers the same period, the Second Age, that the show covers. From what I gather the show is more loosely inspired by various source materials, but it seems like it will draw a lot of inspiration from this one. I will def. be checking it out though. Thanks for posting about it. 2y
