The Hollow Kind
The Hollow Kind: A Novel | Andy Davidson

Andy Davidson's epic horror novel about the spectacular decline of the Redfern family, haunted by an ancient evil. Nellie Gardner is looking for a way out of an abusive marriage when she learns that her long-lost grandfather, August Redfern, has willed her his turpentine estate. She throws everything she can think of in a bag and flees to Georgia with her eleven-year-old son, Max, in tow. It turns out that the "estate" is a decrepit farmhouse on a thousand acres of old pine forest, but Nellie is thrilled about the chance for a fresh start for her and Max, and a chance for the happy home she never had. So it takes her a while to notice the strange scratching in the walls, the faint whispering at night, how the forest is eerily quiet. But Max sees what his mother can't: They're no safer here than they had been in South Carolina. In fact, things might even be worse. There's something wrong with Redfern Hill. Something lurks beneath the soil, ancient and hungry, with the power to corrupt hearts and destroy souls. It is the true legacy of Redfern Hill: a kingdom of grief and death, to which Nellies own blood has granted her the key. From the author of The Boatman's Daughter, The Hollow Kind is a jaw-dropping novel about legacy and the horrors that hide in the dark corners of family history. Andy Davidson's gorgeous, Gothic fable tracing the spectacular fall of the Redfern family will haunt you long after you turn the final page.

“…and for a while after, in the quiet they shared, he would be hers and only hers, and in those brief moments she felt as if she could live a lifetime with this man.”

I really liked this. This has a nice mix of family drama set against cosmic horror with writing that reminded me of Eudora Welty. That writing that firmly places you in nature where you feel the sun and hear the mosquitos while stepping through tall lush grass. Told in 2 timelines we witness the rise and fall of a family on an unforgiving piece of land that‘s home to something not so nice. Pick!

Cathythoughts Great twisty branches ♥️ 1y
LeahBergen The Eudora Welty comparison has me intrigued. 👀 1y
batsy What @LeahBergen said! Great review; adding to my list despite being a scaredy-cat who works up the nerve to read a horror novel once a year or so😆 1y

Reggie @LeahBergen @batsy I read one of her short stories in college and it‘s the one about a woman and a man who is not her husband and they travel down to a juke joint but Welty is talking about how the road is choked with bougainvillea, how an alligator crosses the road, the boisterous nature of the juke joint while they can still hear the geese outside. Nature was married to the narrative in there. Same here. 1y
KristiAhlers Well now I‘ve got to look for this one! 1y

What?!!!! Lol, I had to go look the movie up. It‘s not explicit, everything is off screen so it‘s not too bad. @Michael_Gee in your year of everything rat did you come across this movie? Reading this because I might go see Andy Davidson up in Denver at the end of the month. Here‘s the link to the scene. https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=8TatL-_b850

I really enjoyed this #audiobook! Well-performed and definitely creepy for the #spookyseason! Nellie and her son move into the home her grandfather left to her but it‘s apparent that they aren‘t alone in this GA property that was once home to a flourishing turpentine farm. Moving through a past timeline and a 1989 one, I really enjoyed my first experience with this talented author! Looking forward to reading more from Davidson in the future!
