This Common Secret: My Journey as an Abortion Doctor | Susan Wicklund, Alan S. Kesselheim
10 posts | 10 read | 15 to read
In This Common Secret Dr. Susan Wicklund chronicles her emotional and dramatic twenty-year career on the front lines of the abortion war. Growing up in working class, rural Wisconsin, Wicklund had her own painful abortion at a young age. It was not until she became a doctor that she realized how many women shared her ordeal of an unwanted pregnancyand how hidden this common experience remains. This is the story of Susan's love for a profession that means listening to women and helping them through one of the most pivotal and controversial events in their lives. Hers is also a calling that means sleeping on planes and commuting between clinics in different statesand that requires her to wear a bulletproof vest and to carry a .38 caliber revolver. This is also the story of the women whom Susan serves, women whose options are increasingly limited. Through these intimate, complicated, and inspiring accounts, Wicklund reveals the truth about the women's clinics that anti-abortion activists portray as little more than slaughterhouses for the unborn. As we enter the most fevered political fight over abortion America has ever seen, this raw and powerful memoir shows us what is at stake.

This book is a terrific look at the realities of being an abortion doctor. Wicklund details a life under siege by protestors who constantly cross lines alongside her own commitment to provide compassionate care. She also debunks many myths about abortion. Stories like this are needed now more than ever. This is superb.

The Stacks podcast put together a great reading list organized around reproductive rights: https://bookshop.org/lists/books-on-abortion.

I read _This Common Secret_ a few years ago and learned a lot from it. Not on this particular list, but highly recommended if you can find it: Rickie Solinger's _Wake Up Little Susie: Single Pregnancy and Race Before Roe v. Wade_.

I loved this book so much. It was heart breaking, scary, and still—beautiful. Dr. Wicklund went through so much bullshit and lived in fear but she never gave in. No other medical centers face harassment, threats, violence. No other med centers need guards, escorts, locked doors. Why?! She‘s an amazing dr—she learned to listen, to have empathy and compassion! Thank you so much, Dr. Wicklund. Onward in the fight! #abortionishealthcare

Everyone should read this book. I was raised in a conservative household and was taught that abortion was a sin. Well, over the years I have become more pro-choice and feminist. This book was eye-opening for me. Dr. Wicklund tells of her work providing reproductive health services to her patients and their stories. It is infuriating to read about the barriers that women face to get the care they deserve imposed by those who claim to be pro-life.

I had to sit down and prepare myself to read this book. I knew it would be hard. I am feminist and very pro-choice, and the amount of shit Dr. Wicklund has had to go through to make sure women like me can exercise their right to choose is both inspiring and depressing. The very personal danger she's been in, and her persisting through it, is amazing. The book is very easy to read, despite the subject matter. Definitely recommend it.

It's #Bowl17 time! I'm raising money for the D.C. Abortion Fund. We're an all-volunteer organization that works to ensure everyone can access the abortion care they need regardless of income or insurance status. I hope that, if you're able, you'll consider a donation: https://bowl.nnaf.org/fundraiser/920487

Out of the first chapter: "Because of the work of people like you, people like me don't end up killing their friends."

This is a powerful story of Wicklund's choice to become an abortion provider and the harassment and threats that she and her family had to endure. It explores the grays in the abortion discussion. I highly recommend this book no matter on which side of the topic you stand.

Wow, just wow... I am amazed about the daily harassment that abortion doctors are facing. The self righteous is disturbing.

#uniquefact: I'm adopted, and some people seem to think "pro-choice adoptee" is an oxymoron. In fact, I've always been deeply pro-choice in part because I'm adopted—because I know that carrying out a pregnancy for adoption is a beautiful and generous act, but also a difficult one that should never be forced on anyone. This memoir of an abortion provider made the necessity of safe, legal, and accessible abortion so clear to me when I read it at 17.

ErickaS_Flyleafunfurled Thats an interesting perspective on this issue - thanks for sharing 8y
BookishFeminist Thanks for sharing! I know so many people who are adopted and have similar views to you. Makes me wonder where this stereotype comes from! 8y
