The Three Dahlias
The Three Dahlias | Katy Watson
6 posts | 6 read | 7 to read
Three rival actresses team up to solve a murder at the stately home of the author who made them famous - only to discover the solution lies in the stories themselves. A contemporary mystery with a Golden Age feel, perfect for fans of Agatha Christie and Jessica Fellowes. In attendance: the VIP fans, staying at Aldermere; the fan club president turned convention organizer; the team behind the newest movie adaptation of Davenport's books; the Davenport family themselves - and the three actresses famous for portraying Lettice's 1930s detective, Dahlia Lively. National treasure Rosalind King, from the original movies. TV Dahlia for thirteen seasons, Caro Hooper. And ex-child star Posy Starling, fresh out of the fame wilderness (and rehab) to take on the Dahlia mantle for the new movie. Each actress has her own interpretation of the character - but this English summer weekend they will have to put aside their differences, as the crimes at Aldermere turns anything but cosy. When fictional death turns into real bodies, can the three Dahlias find the answers to the murders among the fans, the film crew, the family - or even in Lettice's books themselves?

Two issues with this one: marketing said this was an homage to Golden Age mysteries, so I was expecting something like a Golden Age mystery. While that was there in the setting, this was actually a cozy )which is fine, but not my preference).

Secondly, the way Watson handles 3 points of view made this book feel choppy and disconnected to me, and really dampened my experience.

I really enjoyed this one. I thought the 3 MCs were well-written & well-rounded. Their developing friendship was nicely done & the plot itself was intricate without being overwhelmingly difficult. I would definitely read a sequel, in fact, I found myself wanting to read the fictional Dahlia Lively series itself if only it existed! 4🌟

My thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Little, Brown Book Group UK / Constable, for the opportunity to read an ARC.

A fun book themed mystery! I love a good book themed mystery -- and the author went above and beyond by crafting a whole fictional book series, author, movie and tv series, and convention for this book. Adding in the actresses who portray the same role added a new element than the usual bookstore, library, book collectors.

I can't wait for the next book!
