Maths-whizz Alice Jones has already solved a mystery or two. Persuaded by super-fan and wannabe sidekick, Sammy, to investigate a disappearing scientist, she's soon entangled in her trickiest case yet. Is whacky science really to blame for his vanishing? Or is something more sinister afoot?

Book 3/150 for 2017. 4.75/5 ⭐️ What can I say about this book? It is fantastic fun! Ten year old me would have loved it just as much as 39 year old me does. An intelligent, spunky & independent kid sleuth going through adventures while solving a big mystery. Great characterization (and character development) of primary & secondary characters, lots of humor & a sequel coming soon (tagged below). I can't wait!

😂😂😂 OK, one paragraph in and I already love this book & narrator! (Also, new book alert--this just came out in the USA yesterday)

thegirlwiththelibrarybag Woohoo! I loved this! So hilarious! 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Ooh! And the second book is showing on book depository! I might have to find a book store, asap! 7y
GlitteryOtters @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I have the second one on preorder (also, for some weird reason they are only doing a physical copy of it, no ebook which seems odd since it is the same publisher publishing two books from the series in the same month--why would you make the 1st available on ebook, but not the second?!) 7y

thegirlwiththelibrarybag @GlitteryOtters, I rang the bookshop and they said it wasn't available until April... so I ordered from book depository (where it is available and much cheaper than it would be at a bookshop) bit weird about the ebooks! 🤔 7y
GlitteryOtters @thegirlwiththelibrarybag I just checked the status of my preorder & it went from saying "ships January 30th" to "we will email you when available"...so looks like I will have to wait a while for it too. Not cool, Scholastic books!! ? 7y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @GlitteryOtters, but I want it nowwwwwwwww 😭 are you enjoying it? It made me nostalgic for my childhood bike (I has a yellow BMX bike that was rescued from a garbage pile by my uncle. It had a banana seat (much more comfortable than the average bike seat) which was yellow and sparkly ☺️ and really rusty handlebars 😂 I used to go on adventures! 7y

It's after midnight so I can post my first #somethingforsept post 🙋🏻 August was a pretty laid back reading month for me but I found a few gems! Alice Jones being one :) HAPPY SEPTEMBER!

GlitteryOtters Thanks for introducing me to these books. I'm totally looking forward to reading this series...this and The Ghost Light are both listed as to be released here in January, I'm hoping to preorder one or both, if my book budget allows. In reading about them, they sound like i something I absolutely would have adored reading when I was that age. 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @GlitteryOtters, ☺️ I do love giving kidlit recommendations, so thank you! Tell me more about The Ghost Light! 8y
GlitteryOtters this was the description: "Old refurbished theatre, the Beryl, is re-opening. Days before opening night, the ghost light - left on at night to appease the ghosts of actors - is extinguished. Alice digs into the Beryl's past, sleuthing in a network of dark backstage corridors and cobwebby storage rooms. Gradually, she starts to uncover the hundred-year-old secret of the theatre: a stolen diamond. Is the Beryl haunted by a ghost-or a living thief?" 8y
GlitteryOtters Looks/sounds good and right up my alley. Any kids books with mysteries and theater connections and I'm sold...and the protagonist sounds so awesome. Absolutely my sort of book! 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @GlitteryOtters, ahh! It's the sequel to this book! Awesome! 8y

I loved this! Kid sleuths are my fave! This has a bit of all the good stuff - school holidays, a loving but chronically absent-minded Dad, opportunity to ride bikes around town, great friendship (also character growth - I'm looking at you Kevin Jordan), sibling angst and a pretty sweet locked room mystery/disappearance of a scientist who was working on an invisibility suit...

Bought this on a whim as the cover art's 90s vibes reeled me in 😎

Theresa Martin Freeman...love him!! 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag He's my fave! He was made as part of an epic prank war between myself and a work friend. (It's all very mature - I added a Senca Crane (from the Hunger Games) beard to hers 😂) @theresa 8y
Theresa That's awesome!! 😂😂 8y

Does anyone else get a Anastasia Krupnik vibe from this cover?

susanw It screams Daria to me! 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @susanw, there is something daria-esq in the roundness of the glasses. 8y

Hmm, my not-so-unique fact is that I read past my bed time (even when I have much adulting to do not so much later this morning 😨) I also have a serious weakness for kid sleuths (although I've not read any Nancy Drew) so this book was 👌.

Do you have a favourite kid sleuth?

TheSpinecrackersBookClub Hah. I love this. I'm a complete night owl and regret it every morning. 8y
SusanInTiburon I love kid sleuths!! One I think deserves more love is Eugene Smalls from Huge. Scrappy kid! 8y

Chessa Nice! My kids love kid sleuths, so I'm taking notes! 📝 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I hear you @TheSpinecrackersBookClub 😴 I'm feeling good now but I'm sure the afternoon will be brutal! 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Ooh! That's a new one to me @SusanInTiburon, hopefully my library has it :) 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag Of course @rubyslippersreads 😊 I actually haven't read Harriet 😅 bit of an oversight - I remember the movie... 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag @megt, I wanted to be George from the Famous Five ☺️ 8y
tpixie Harriet the Spy. Encyclopedia Brown 8y
rubyslippersreads @thegirlwiththelibrarybag Harriet the book is SO much better than Harriet the movie! 😀 8y
