Goodnight, Vivienne, Goodnight
Goodnight, Vivienne, Goodnight | Steven Carroll
7 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 4 to read
From one of our finest writers - winner of the Miles Franklin, the Commonwealth Writers Prize and the Prime Minister's Literary Award - comes a wistful and emotional story that imagines a happier ending for the mercurial and complicated Vivienne Haigh-Wood, first wife of the great poet, TS Eliot. London, June 1940. With help from friends, Vivienne Haigh-Wood, the wife of celebrated poet TS Eliot, is about to effect a daring escape from Northumberland House, the private insane asylum where she has been held for the past four years. Her family, and most particularly her husband, think she's insane - and maybe she has been, in the past, Vivienne thinks, mad with love, that is, but she is starting to finally feel like herself again. There is an old law, Vivienne has been told, that if a person can break out of an asylum and stay free for thirty days, proving they can look after themselves, they can't make you go back. But closing in on Vivienne is the young Detective Sergeant Stephen Minter, a man with a hidden past of his own, who has orders to track her down... With Goodnight, Vivienne, Goodnight, Steven Carroll completes his critically acclaimed, award-winning and much-loved Eliot Quartet. This novel is a poignant, deeply felt and intensely moving novel of beginnings, endings and reinvention, about the aftermath of a marriage and the reassembling of a broken woman. A delicate dance between what was and what might have been, between fact and fiction, the novel tells a daringly revisionary story of Vivienne - TS Eliot's first wife, the 'mad woman in the attic' - imagining a wholly different and entirely satisfying ending to her story.

Op shop finds from 3 weekends ago! I‘m partial to a Princess Highway dress and this was in the window so I couldn‘t resist. One of my favourite things to do is read in the bath with a glass of wine so there are bath products in this shot too. I collect Rose Tremain books. I already own a burn after writing book but this one looked different. The pottery has my grandmother‘s name on it so I thought I‘d use it as a pot for a plant. I like the style.

#12Booksof2022 #June

This story of the imagined experience of Vivienne Haigh-Wood, first wife of TS Eliot, completed Steven Carroll‘s excellent Eliot Quartet in style. It just beats the total surprise of Duff Cooper‘s Operation Heartbreak for my favourite June read.

Andrew65 Interesting reading. 1y

I loved this book. Why…a retelling…a mix of of fact and fiction! The story of TS Eliot‘s wife Vivienne…some early history, an investigation by a wonderful policeman. Beautifully written. It‘s a joy to read. Consequently I have gone straight to another of his Eliot Quartet so I don‘t have a book hangover 😂😂
@CarolynM 👍🏼❤️

Last of the Eliot Quartet is devoted to his first wife, Vivienne, & explores the possibility that she didn‘t deserve to spend the last years of her life in a mental hospital. Imagining that she escaped in 1940 provides a backdrop for reflections on her life & marriage & the policeman charged with finding her comes to his own conclusions about them & about his own situation. So beautifully written I couldn't stop reading - sorry Sally. #ozfiction

Freespirit So glad you loved it..I‘m on a run of night shifts but once I‘m on days off I will plow through it. Lovely so far!! ✔️❤️ (edited) 2y

CarolynM @Freespirit Thanks for giving me the shove to get started on it 🙂 I‘m sure it won‘t take you long to finish it. 2y
Crazeedi I've not heard of this series but it sounds very good 2y
CarolynM @Crazeedi I think they are really good. None of the books are really about TS Eliot, they are all other people‘s stories (some real, some imaginary) that he touches to a greater or lesser extent. The first one is 2y
Crazeedi @CarolynM thanks! I'm going to look for it 2y

@CarolynM and I are reading this book together. It‘s about the wife of TS Eliot. She was placed in a private asylum and this is Steven Carrols story…part fact, part fiction. I‘m 1/4 through and already loving it!
It‘s the 4th book in his Eliot Quartet.
Carolyn I also like that it has some early life stories and the police investigation as the story develops. The character of the detective❤️Lovely writing..occasional references to cricket also❤️✔️

CarolynM You must have posted while I was writing my post. I couldn‘t stop reading. Such beautiful writing and such a sad story. “Aunty” was not a friend to Vivienne. 2y
Freespirit Yes I agree.. I wonder if she had endometriosis! @CarolynM (edited) 2y

Centique I love the crocheted blanket. My mother crocheted and that brings back lovely memories 😍 2y
CarolynM @Centique My daughter took up crochet during the lockdowns. She started with the squares, moved on to socks and now she crochets jumpers! She also makes lino cut prints of (mostly dead) musicians & people‘s pets. She doesn‘t get her arty/crafty talents from me, that‘s for sure! 2y
Centique @CarolynM that sounds amazing! What a clever and talented daughter 🙌 2y
Rissreads Learning to crochet is on my list! ♥️ 2y
