The Forever Dog: Surprising New Science to Help Your Canine Companion Live Younger, Healthier, and Longer | Rodney Habib, Karen Shaw Becker
9 posts | 1 read | 8 to read
#1 New York Times Bestseller In this pathbreaking guide, two of the worlds most popular and trusted pet care advocates reveal new science to teach us how to delay aging and provide a long, happy, healthy life for our canine companions. Like their human counterparts, dogs have been getting sicker and dying prematurely over the past few decades. Why? Scientists are beginning to understand that the chronic diseases afflicting humanscancer, obesity, diabetes, organ degeneration, and autoimmune disordersalso beset canines. As a result, our beloved companions are vexed with preventable health problems throughout much of their lives and suffer shorter life spans. Because our pets cant make health and lifestyle decisions for themselves, its up to pet parents to make smart, science-backed choices for lasting vitality and health. The Forever Dog gives us the practical, proven tools to protect our loyal four-legged companions. Rodney Habib and Karen Becker, DVM, globetrotted (pre-pandemic) to galvanize the best wisdom from top geneticists, microbiologists, and longevity researchers; they also interviewed people whose dogs have lived into their 20s and even 30s. The result is this unprecedented and comprehensive guide, filled with surprising information, invaluable advice, and inspiring stories about dogs and the people who love them. The Forever Dog prescriptive plan focuses on diet and nutrition, movement, environmental exposures, and stress reduction, and can be tailored to the genetic predisposition of particular breeds or mixes. The authors discuss various types of foodincluding what the commercial manufacturers dont want us to knowand offer recipes, easy solutions, and tips for making sure our dogs obtain the nutrients they need. Habib and Dr. Becker also explore how external factors we often dont think about can greatly affect a dogs overall health and wellbeing, from everyday insults to the body and its physiology, to the role our own lifestyles and our vets choices play. Indeed, the health equation works both ways and can travel up the leash. Medical breakthroughs have expanded our choices for canine healthif you know what they are. This definitive dog-care guide empowers us with the knowledge we need to make wise choices, and to keep our dogs healthy and happy for years to come.

❤️❤️❤️ What I found particularly meaningful throughout this book was how the authors tied human health and canine health together. Chock full of actionable ideas for any budget. If you have a dog, you should read this book. My only pet peeve was their random use of measurements. Sometimes they‘d use Metric, other times Imperial, and sometimes both.

💚💚💚 Dr. Karen Becker and one of her friends developed this pledge for dog parents. After reading The Forever Dog, I‘m hooked. Bernie and LIzzie, I‘m a longevity junkie. Our first batch of mushroom broth is cooling now.

AlaMich The only thing I‘ve ever seen my greyhound NOT eat was a SweetTart he found on the floor. He promptly spit it out. 😆 2y

I bought The List last spring when we were getting ready to move to Canada. I needed to find a fresh food option available in BC. A couple years ago, I also purchased the annual access to the Petsumer Reports database at The Truth About Pet Food. Highly recommend both resources for anyone trying to find better food options for your pets.

I‘m loving this book! I‘m actually pausing reading because I want to make a grocery list of new foods for my two dogs to try, especially as training treats for our walks. But there‘s so much great information here. I foresee a spreadsheet in my future!

We just sent off 💩 samples to Animal Biome in San Francisco for both our dogs. Our new vet told us about this start up who‘s generating some good buzz in vet circles. So far the buzz centers around anecdotal evidence, but over time it seems like there could be some solid data. Was thrilled to see Habib and Becker specifically mention Animal Biome in this book as one resource for pet parents.

Megabooks I‘m a vet, and I watched a CE last year that was about doing an in-clinic fecal transplant. It was interesting! 2y
DogMomIrene @Megabooks Yes, they mention this in the book! A dog version of what human doctors do with C-diff patients. We actually got our reports back from Animal Biome last night. It‘s got a ton of data in it. I‘m going to have to re-read it carefully and send it off to our vet. 2y

This book focuses on helping pet parents make the best fresh food choices they can afford for their dog, mainly because food is a huge factor in longevity and it‘s something we can control. However, there‘s still a nice variety of advice covering other strategies to help your dog enjoy a healthy life. I especially like how the authors frequently tie the well being of the pet parent to the well being of their beloved pet.

BethM Oooh I‘m intrigued! Both our dogs just went to the vet abs he couldn‘t believe how healthy they were (outside of allergies for the one). We do a grain free diet this time and it seems to help! 2y
DogMomIrene @BethM Excellent! The first two parts of the book focus on building background about dog health, including some good history. Part III dives into more specific actions. I just started Part III and I can already tell I‘ll be making some lists and highlighting a ton! 2y
