Spider is gaunt, threadbare, unnerved by everything from his landlady to the smell of gas. He tells us his story in a storm of beautiful language that slowly reveals itself as a fiendishly layered construction of truth and illusion. With echoes of Beckett, Poe, and Paul Bowles, Spider is a tale of horror and madness, storytelling and skepticism, a novel whose dizzying style lays bare the deepest layers of subconscious terror.

Pickpick

This book is told entirely from the point of view of a man with schizophrenia, living in a group home in London. It‘s very well-written and eerie. Spider starts dissociating from reality around age 13 and becomes convinced that his mother has died. We learn how he deals with that and why he‘s been in a psych hospital for 20 years. I highly recommend this novel if you enjoy Gothic tales. Five stars.

#90'sinJuly no one writes better about people #insaneinthebrain than Patrick McGrath. Asylum is actually my favourite but not pictured as someone borrowed it. Spider is great too

DeborahSmall @Cinfhen no Cindy I just haven't been to bed. My insomnia has been horrible the last 2 weeks. I'm planning on being asleep by 6, if I can come off Litsy!! 7y
Cinfhen Oh no...I'm sorry. Insomnia is the worst- how do you function the next day??? 7y
DeborahSmall @Cinfhen I struggle especially with the kids off school. Stephen teaches so he's off work and it's a great help. I'll probably try and sleep until 12 and hope it's enough. Spending tomorrow at the hospice so not too bad. I usually have a bad few weeks and one good week but no good week since May!! I've suffered chronic insomnia for 8 years now. X 7y
