Howl | Shaun David Hutchinson
7 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
From critically acclaimed Shaun David Hutchinson comes a gritty and raw portrayal of the oftentimes traumatic experience of growing up. Virgil Knox was attacked by a monster. Of course, no one in Merritt believes him. Not even after he stumbled into the busy town center, bleeding, battered, and bruised, for everyone to see. Hed been drinking, they said. He was hanging out where he wasnt supposed to, they said. It mustve been a bear, or a badger, or a gatordefinitely no monster. Virgil doesnt think it was any of those things. Hes positive it was a monster. But being the new kid in a town where everybody knows everybody is hard enough as it is without being the kid whos afraid of monsters, so he tries to keep a low profile. Except he knows the monster is still out there. And if he isnt careful, Virgils afraid itll come back to finish him off, or worsethat hell become one himself.

“Sometimes you can scream night and day and folks still won‘t hear you.”

“They‘re talking about me - calling me a liar, saying I made the whole thing up, saying I went into the sprawl that night and let something attack me for attention - but not one of them has bothered to talk to me. They say I‘m the liar, but they‘re the ones making up stories about what happened that night. They don‘t care about the truth.”

“A water moccasin‘ll bite you if you try handling it. It ain‘t personal; it‘s just their nature. I got nothing against them snakes, but I know to steer clear.”

I think I like Mr. Hilliker. He promotes critical thinking.

“However, you should get into the habit of being specific. Rather than calling an idea crazy, describe what about it you find challenging.”

Some books I *might* get started on in February while finishing up some of the many I started this month, but I‘m terrible at sticking to reading plans, so this is all subject to change. Have you read any of these? Are any of them on your TBR list?

Ruthiella I‘ve read Grendel, Circe and Room. Of those three, Room was the most memorable for me. 2y
abookishbutterfly @Ruthiella I do have high hopes for Room. I saw the movie long ago and have wanted to more in depth story since then. 2y
