The Book of Genesis
The Book of Genesis: Firstfruits | Brian Simmons
8 posts | 1 read
The Book of Genesis is Gods autobiography and the foundation upon which all revelation rests. The purpose of this book is to give the origin of all things, including the cosmic order of the universe and the covenant relationship between God and his people. Speaking the Word from his eternal dwelling place of light, God fashioned everything from nothing, perfectly displaying his awesome wonder. We will never be able to take the mystery out of Creation, for a God who is incomprehensible in his greatness accomplished it. One of the over-arching themes of Genesis is Gods blessing. His highest order is not the earth or the cosmos, it is man and woman, made after his kind, to be containers for his glory. Genesis showcases Gods redemptive heart toward the worlda theme that can be traced throughout the rest of the Hebrew Scriptures. When God created the heavens and the earth, the earth was completely formless and empty, with nothing but darkness draped over the deep. Gods Spirit swept over the face of the waters. And then God announced: Let there be light, and light burst forth! Genesis 1:1-3

FinIshed the book of Genesis today with the #BibleBuddyRead and I just love the Passion Translation. I can‘t wait until all of the Old Testament is available in this translation! I have everything that‘s available so far. The big aha for me in the reading today is that Joseph was responsible for the Israelites slavery - though it was to save their lives. I never had made that connection before.

quirkyreader MelAnn, so far I am having difficulty with that translation. I know the translator is putting his all into it, still there is something about it I can‘t put my finger on. 2y
MelAnn @quirkyreader everyone has their own preferences … this one is definitely mine! But not everyone agrees and that‘s certainly ok! 2y
BookBabe 😮 I didn‘t know that not all of the Bible is available in that translation yet! I‘ve enjoyed the verses you‘ve shared from the TPT. To me they feel very beautiful and full of love. ❤️ 2y
BookBabe Also, ditto on the Joseph/slavery connection! 😳 2y
MelAnn @BookBabe all of the NT, Psalms Proverbs, Song of Solomon are available in one Bible. Then he did Genesis, Isaiah and then there are others like Judges Ruth etc .. 2y

I don‘t ever remember reading this passage in Sunday School growing up - or hearing it in any sermon. 🤷🏻‍♀️ So, does this mean guests are more valuable than virgin daughters? It also doesn‘t appear that Lot knows he‘s hosting angels. #biblebuddyread

BookBabe Ohhhh boy, these passages really appalled me…also Genesis 19:30-36 🤢 2y
MelAnn @BookBabe yes - Lot & his fam were a stark contrast to his Uncle Abraham! 2y

Can you imagine for a moment? Being a male in Abraham‘s household that day? “Oh you changed your name, that‘s nice.” … “Wait! You‘re gonna do what?!!!” #biblebuddyread

BookBabe 🤣🤣🤣🙌🏻 THANK YOU for this post!! I was totally thinking the exact same thing! 😂😂😂 Anyone else? 🙋🏻‍♀️🙈 2y
MelAnn @BookBabe so nice to have another person in this study with a sense of humor 🤭 2y
SamanthaMarie @BookBabe @MelAnn OH MY goodness for REAL. And just that all of that happened for all of them that day. What whiplash 🤣 no trying it out, seeing how Abraham healed... also, can you imagine being the wives and mothers taking care of all of them after that?! 2y
MelAnn And here today people are leaving workplaces who require a much kinder jab 😂 @SamanthaMarie 2y

#biblebuddyread I wonder if Sarai had asked him to do the dishes, take out the trash, mow the lawn, attend a meeting… if he would have been so… compliant? 😂

BookBabe 😂😂😂👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 2y

Today‘s reading is done - this was the verse that stood out to me today. One of them anyway.

SamanthaMarie Yes! Such a good verse. I love that a few of the esteemed people in these first chapters of the Bible are so esteemed because they walk closely with the Lord (Genesis 5:22-24 regarding Enoch and Genesis 6:9 regarding Noah.) Abram and these others are a beautiful example of the close and trusting relationship God wants with all of us ♡♡ 2y
BookBabe Yes! This is a great verse, and I have to say I really prefer the passion translation on this one. I read it in the CSB and it was all a bunch of pronouns, so I wasn‘t clear on who “he” and “him” were regarding the righteousness. 😅 thanks for clearing that up! 2y
BookBabe @SamanthaMarie amen! So well said. 👏🏻👏🏻👏🏻 2y
MelAnn @SamanthaMarie that‘s so interesting because the thought occurred to me that it would be so interesting to do a study on those in the OT who “walked with God” as I was reading through this! 2y
SamanthaMarie @MelAnn Yes!! It really would be. I love that you were thinking and noticing that too!! 2y

#BibleBuddyRead from today‘s reading. There‘s also another verse that stood out to me as well that I will share here in a bit!

BookBabe Yes! 🙌🏻 This verse stood out to me too. (Great image btw!) …I have to admit, you‘re winning me over with the Passion Translation! One of my dear friends uses it and loves it too. 2y
MelAnn @BookBabe I‘m in love with it. I also read in NET and NLT and the Message … especially verses that stand out to me .. reading in different translations really helps me meditate on it and drives the meaning home. 2y

#BibleBuddyRead I am reading through the Passion translation in my Olive Tree Bible app in addition to my NET Bible. This is from today‘s reading and the SOAP verse suggested in the Love God Greatly NET Bible which pretty much lines up with the Bible in 52 Weeks buddy read timeline! I love the Passion translation of this verse!

BookBabe Beautiful verse translation, and beautiful image! Thank you for sharing! ❤️ 2y
