She Came to Stay
She Came to Stay | Simone de Beauvoir
6 posts | 5 read | 10 to read
Set in Paris on the eve of World War II and sizzling with love, anger, and revenge, She Came to Stay explores the changes wrought in the soul of a woman and a city soon to fall. Although Franoise considers her relationship with Pierre an open one, she falls prey to jealousy when the gamine Xavire catches his attention. The moody young woman from the countryside pries her way between Franoise and Pierre, playing up to each one and deviously pulling them apart, until the only way out of the triangle is destruction. "Behind the sympathy there is curiosity. . . . A writer whose tears for her characters freeze as they drop." -- Sunday London Times

Mehso-so

For the most part, She Came To Stay was just good. Not rush-out-into-the-street-and-shout-about-it good, like The Bell Jar, just good enough to keep going. I felt like it was a bit too long; after just 150 pages, I was wondering where on earth it could possibly go, so the final sections dragged a bit. And the “shock twist ending” was kind of lost on me... Full review here: http://keepingupwiththepenguins.com/she-came-to-stay-simone-de-beauvoir/

#FierceFebDay 15: Simone De Beauvoir has always been perceived as some kind of a #RebelGirl. The book on the left can also serve as #Memoir for #ReadingResolutions.

batsy I need to read these! These covers are amazing 😍 6y
GatheringBooks @batsy part of my book haul from my librarian friend‘s collection. at least she is comforted knowing that these babies have gone to a new home. 6y
Cinfhen I‘m getting a Barbara Streisand vibe from that book cover😂😂 6y

Day two of #FeistyFeb, not going to lie, this was tough as there aren't too many #shadows in my shelves! These are all great picks though!⭐⭐⭐⭐⭐
@RealLifeReading

Pruzy What's the date of that edition of the Beauvoir novel? I have the hardest time finding books of hers that are in reasonably good shape (ie Not from the 1960s and falling apart) 7y
ReadosaurusText Ooh! Nice shadow on Handmaid's Tale. Very clever! 7y
heatherkaz @Pruzy , '99. I also have paperbacks of the Mandarins and All Men Are Mortal, they're all Norton publishing. I couldn't say at this point where I got these from, but it was likely Amazon 7y
Pruzy @heatherkaz Nice! I will have to look up some newer editions 7y
