The Next Ship Home: A Novel of Ellis Island | Heather Webb
12 posts | 9 read | 15 to read
Ellis Island, 1902: Two women band together to hold America to its promise: "Give me your tired, your poor ... your huddled masses yearning to breathe free..." A young Italian woman arrives on the shores of America, her sights set on a better life. That same day, a young American woman reports to her first day of work at the immigration center. But Ellis Island isn't a refuge for Francesca or Alma, not when ships depart every day with those who are refused entry to the country and when corruption ripples through every corridor. While Francesca resorts to desperate measures to ensure she will make it off the island, Alma fights for her dreams of becoming a translator, even as women are denied the chance. As the two women face the misdeeds of a system known to manipulate and abuse immigrants searching for new hope in America, they form an unlikely friendshipand share a terrible secretaltering their fates and the lives of the immigrants who come after them. Inspired by true events and for fans of Kristina McMorris and Hazel Gaynor, The Next Ship Home holds up a mirror to our own times, deftly questioning America's history of prejudice and exclusion while also reminding us of our citizens' singular determination. This is a novel of the dark secrets of Ellis Island, when entry to "the land of the free" promised a better life but often delivered something drastically different, and when immigrant strength and female friendship found ways to triumph even on the darkest days.

I learned a lot about Ellis island and immigration while reading. I was shocked to hear of the abuses that many of the immigrants endured by those who were supposed to help them by welcoming them to our country. I read alot of historical fiction. To be honest,I don‘t feel that this book stood out in any way from the others. While the book wasn‘t bad, the story seemed slow to me at times. All in all, I‘m glad that I read it as I found it educational

I loved this story of hope, triumph over trials. Alma and Francesca's stories told in alternating chapters and intertwining with each other are an important part of American history. These characters are true feminists of the early twentieth century, strong, determined, and brave!

Happy President‘s Day 🇺🇸❤️🤍💙 I‘m celebrating by doing laundry and cleaning the bathroom 😆 I finished this beautiful book today though! I love the books that have you guessing what‘s going to happen next. There were 100 pages left and I was so anxious to read how Alma and Francesca‘s stories were going to end. Worry not, the ending was perfect (though I wouldn‘t mind a sequel to see how Alma & Francesca are doing 😃)

Aims42 @SilversReviews Me too!!! It‘s a part of history I haven‘t read much about and now I‘m hooked to learn more. Love when books do that 😁 2y

🌊 𝗕𝗼𝗼𝗸 𝗥𝗲𝘃𝗶𝗲𝘄 ⛴️⁣

𝗧𝗵𝗲 𝗡𝗲𝘅𝘁 𝗦𝗵𝗶𝗽 𝗛𝗼𝗺𝗲 is historical fiction but 𝗛𝗲𝗮𝘁𝗵𝗲𝗿 𝗪𝗲𝗯𝗯 tackles contemporary issues. An Italian immigrant & German-American Ellis Island matron become friends...& empowered. Corruption, workplace retaliation, sexual coercion/assault, prejudice, social status, & the American dream are compassionately examined. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⁣

I enjoyed this one and learned things, the things I want from historical fiction. I did find the ending a bit rushed, but in spite of that there was enough there to make this a recommended pick. The author captures the immigrant journey and Ellis Island experience, the despair of the poor and the lack of women's and workers rights. She has woven in some real historical figures and related it all the news reports of the times. I gave it 3.75/5.
