The Amazon Charts bestselling author of Unspeakable Things and Bloodline explores the darkness at the heart of the rural Midwest in a novel inspired by a chilling true crime. In the summer of '84, fourteen-year-old Frankie Jubilee is shuttled off to Litani, Minnesota, to live with her estranged mother, a county prosecutor she barely knows. From the start, Frankie senses something uneasy going on in the small town. The locals whisper about The Game, and her mother warns her to stay out of the woods and away from adults. When a bullying gang of girls invites Frankie to The Game, she accepts, determined to find out what's really going on in Litani. She's not the only one becoming paranoid. Hysteria burns through the community. Dark secrets emerge. And Frankie fears that, even in the bright light of day, she might be living among monsters.

Mehso-so

This one is a cross between a pan and so-so for me, I did not love it. Based around some real cases of child abuse during the satanic panic, it just didn‘t do it for me. Just kind of disappointing compared to Bloodline and Unspeakable Things.

Jess Lourey is back!! I really liked Unspeakable Things but was disappointed by Bloodline. I figured I'd give her next book a go & let it be the tiebreaker. I'm glad I did. This book reminded me of Unspeakable Things & was a fast-paced thriller. The subject matter is uncomfortable but done well.
Frankie gets sent to live with her estranged mother in Litani after the passing of her beloved father. She learns of The Game shortly after she arrives⬇️

FelinesAndFelonies & because her mother is the county prosecutor her curiosity threatens to overwhelm her. Frankie is warned repeatedly not to play in the woods around Litani & not to trust the adults in town either. As Frankie becomes more paranoid she discovers her father's past, her mother's secrets, & the origin of The Game. ⭐⭐⭐⭐ 2y

I loved Unspeakable Things and really enjoyed Bloodline. So far Litani (inspired by the satanic panic and some real cases in Minnesota) is pretty good. Definite tw for child abuse, and while not explicit it‘s the same deep sense of dread I‘ve had while reading previous books by this author.

This is the third book I have read by Jess Lourey and, wow.... she is a master of writing about small towns with dark secrets. A warning that there is some heavy material in here, which could be upsetting or triggering. But I did enjoy the mystery and the protagonist, Frankie. A quick read and page-turner! ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Finished this one today! I enjoyed it, but FYI it does deal with some heavy topics for anyone with triggers.
