Smile: The Story of a Face
Smile: The Story of a Face | Sarah Ruhl
10 posts | 7 read | 8 to read
The extraordinary story of one woman's ten-year medical and metaphysical odyssey that brought her physical, creative, emotional, and spiritual healing, by a MacArthur genius and two-time Pulitzer finalist. With a play opening on Broadway, and every reason to smile, Sarah Ruhl has just survived a high-risk pregnancy when she discovers the left side of her face is completely paralyzed. She is assured that 90 percent of Bell's palsy patients see spontaneous improvement and experience a full recovery. Like Ruhl's own mother. But Sarah is in the unlucky ten percent. And for a woman, wife, mother, and artist working in theater, the paralysis and the disconnect between the interior and exterior brings significant and specific challenges. So Ruhl begins an intense decade-long search for a cure while simultaneously grappling with the reality of her new face--one that, while recognizably her own--is incapable of accurately communicating feelings or intentions. In a series of piercing, witty, and lucid meditations, Ruhl chronicles her journey as a patient, wife, mother, and artist. She explores the struggle of a body yearning to match its inner landscape, the pain of postpartum depression, the story of a marriage, being a playwright and working mom to three small children, and the desire for a resilient spiritual life in the face of illness. Brimming with insight, humility, and levity, Smile is a triumph by one of America's leading playwrights. It is an intimate examination of loss and reconciliation, and above all else, the importance of perseverance and hope in the face of adversity.

The extra snow and closed roads over Christmas provided a great opportunity to read more than usual. Between my usual slow reading pace & the fact that I am trying to savor this one & take it in slowly, I'm still chipping away. Being able to curl up with this cozy blanket I was just gifted & this perfect #jolabokaflodswap book is living the life I dream of for months leading up to Christmas holidays! Thanks again @ReadingRachael - perfect choice!

ReadingRachael I‘m so happy you‘re enjoying it! ❤️😊 1y

While my husband is outside snowblowing trails for our dog, I'm yet again curled up inside reading. (There were banks 8-10 inches higher than our Berner's back so he kept getting stuck 😄) 3 full days with all roads/highways closed, and even now on the 4th day some are still closed and travel is not recommended. This is the most reading time and least pressure I've felt over Christmas is a long time. Very thankful for a working snowblower though!

Bklover Beautiful!!❄️☃️❄️☃️ 1y
tpixie My husband does that for our dog too! Although since she is only 9 lbs, it doesn‘t take much snow to trap her! 1y
tpixie The snow is beautiful. Mother Nature is a force! 1y
CuriousG @tpixie It truly is beautiful. Our Berner is bred for snow, so is happy to lay in a snowbank for hours. I love winter, but totally respect the power it has to shut our entire lives down when it wants to. We keep lots of non-perishables, extra gas for generator, etc., so that we can just settle in and wait for life to return to normal. Took the pup out for some especially beautiful walks. The quiet from lack of vehicles really makes it more special. 1y
tpixie @CuriousG the quiet would be mystical ❄️ 1y

Could not be more excited about the #jolabokaflodswap. Thank you so very much Rachael! This is the one book that I had decided if it didn't magically get chosen out of my giant TBR, I would buy myself in the new year, so I can't wait to curl up in my blanket. Plus the chocolate & gorgeous metal bookmarks! There is so much snow that the roads have all been closed, so no pressure to go away tonight.

ReadingRachael I am so glad you like it!! I had not come across this book before and it is now a new addition to my own TBR 😂 1y
CuriousG @ReadingRachael I'm really enjoying it so far. I had Bell's Palsy about a decade ago and thank goodness it resolved in about 6 weeks, but knowing how bizarre the relationship between how I felt and what my face would show was, I'm so interested in what Ruhl has to say about how it has been to deal with it over years rather than weeks. 1y

So behind on reviews 😅
This was an excellent and moving memoir written by a woman who suffered from Bell‘s palsy after giving birth to her twins. An examination of the way our face is central to our personal identities as well as communication. A great memoir that made me contemplate the way we see each other and how much we use our faces in all parts of life.

Cinfhen This sounds excellent- thanks for sharing and great prompt choice 🤓 1y
CuriousG I am definitely adding this to my TBR! I went 6 full weeks without being able to blink my right eye or move my facial muscles on that side of my face. Over a decade later most function is back, but not all. The worst part was when I would smile but when only half my face moved, I would instantly feel like, "but wait, am I really happy?" Such a bizarre and emotionally conflicting reality. 1y
Chelsea.Poole @Cinfhen it was really good. Worth a read—I actually listened which was well done. 1y

Chelsea.Poole @CuriousG oh wow you describe a similar experience and feeling that the author of this went through. I am betting you‘d feel very seen in this book! Hope you get a chance to read it! 1y
CuriousG I was so lucky that mine resolved (mostly). I'm a high school teacher & was so glad it happened in summer when I wasn't with students/interacting with co-op employers daily! As side note, I credit the recovery to acupuncture with current run through that forced the muscles to twitch. I had it done every second day the whole time. The only muscles that don't work well now are the ones too close to my eye that didn't get this treatment.... 1y
CuriousG ...I can't say for sure that is what did it, but the progression of return of function lined up with which area we had recently targeted 🤷‍♀️ 1y

⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️ This book was so good! It‘s not just about Ruhl‘s Bell‘s palsy, but also what it means to be able to smile in the first place. It‘s a story of loss and grief, and how she has processed it all. Highly recommend!!

Listening to this because I love Ruhl‘s plays and I also had Bell‘s Palsy—though thankfully recovered with only some nerve tenderness that lingers. So idk why I am shocked to hear one of our greatest living playwrights casually recount being chastised for not being present enough during rehearsals as a new mother but the dramaturg in me is enraged and it reminds me of all the problems in an industry I love and sometimes hate.

Emotional, honest, raw…she courageously holds nothing back. She discloses her feelings of shame, of guilt. She describes the treatments she went through trying to find a cure. She acknowledges the support she receives from her family, especially her husband. I realized that she was going through the stages of grief…grieving the loss of her face as she knew it.

An extraordinary story about the author/playwright‘s experience with Bell‘s Palsy. But it‘s about so much more. A physical, emotional, and medical journey through the ways in which a smile does and does not define us. A memoir of illness, motherhood, beauty, disability, family, and storytelling.

Sarah, a playwright, developed Bell‘s palsy following her second pregnancy. Unfortunately, she was one of the people for whom it didn‘t go away. This memoir is the story of her reclaiming the use of and love for her face.

In the midst of it, she found out she has celiac, which I also have, and that was causing poor nerve growth due to vitamin deficiencies. I didn‘t know that about nerve growth, but I had poor healing after my spinal fusion. 🤔

Cathythoughts Sounds good 👍🏻…. Also only seeing your new profile pic 😍love it .. you are besotted I‘d say ❤️😁 3y
Megabooks @Cathythoughts besotted is a great word!! Despite her new nickname Molly Mayhem, she‘s been a fantastic addition to the family. 💜😁🐶 (edited) 3y

mdemanatee I have been eagerly anticipating this one! Ruhl is one is one of my favorite playwrights. I got Bell‘s Palsy on the way back from NYC in college. Before I had no clue about it and after diagnosis seemed like everyone has encountered. Luckily I did gain full mobility back. 3y
Megabooks @mdemanatee yes, I‘m surprised at its prevalence as well. I‘m glad you fully recovered! As a fan, I think you‘ll enjoy this. It was beautifully and thoughtfully written. 3y
Chelsea.Poole @Cathythoughts I was thinking the same thing! Love the new profile pic 🐶 Molly is a lucky girl! 3y
Chelsea.Poole Thanks for the tag!!! I have been seeing this one around and wondered if it was worth a listen. I‘ll place the hold for it 👯‍♀️ 3y
Megabooks @Chelsea.Poole definitely worth a borrow. It‘s nice to have a memoir buddy! 3y
Megabooks @Cathythoughts @Chelsea.Poole Molly Mayhem got into the white chocolate this afternoon! Fortunately we keep the brown chocolate in a cabinet, but we had some white chocolate on the dining table and she leapt up and ate it (and probably some plastic and foil too!) sigh. She‘s lucky she‘s cute! 😂😂 3y
Chelsea.Poole lol. Molly Mayhem sounds a bit like my kids. They can sniff out candy anywhere 😆 3y
