This is an outstanding memoir about an outstanding guy. Both the end of the book and the introduction, with comments on how the Inuit communities Maurice describes no longer exist, are quite saddening since the rest of the book is basically a feel good story about rather nice and cozy adventures in the Arctic with incredibly friendly natives. I just wish there would have been pictures!

I LOVE these kinds of books! This is the third memoir I've read about someone who spends considerable time with Inuits. It reminds me a lot of the book Blandt Nordpolens Naboer, which is about two stays in Greenland, written by a young man who learned Greenlandic (Maurice learned Inuktitut).

andrew61 That looks interesting. I read The forest people recently by colin m turnbull about life spent with pygmies in the congo and his life was worthy of a novel in itself. 7y
