Mona is a Millennial perfectionist who fails upwards in the midst of the 2008 economic crisis. Despite her potential, and her top-of-her-class college degree, Mona finds herself unemployed, living with her parents, and adrift in life and love. Mona's the sort who says exactly the right thing at absolutely the wrong moments, seeing the world through a cynic's eyes. In the financial and social malaise of the early 2000s, Mona walks a knife's edge as she faces down unemployment, underemployment, the complexities of adult relationships, and the downward spiral of her parents' shattering marriage. The more Mona craves perfection and order, the more she is forced to see that it is never attainable. Mona's journey asks the question: When we find what gives our life meaning, will we be ready for it?

Mona has been a stellar student, a star academic, and an ambitious young woman. But nothing is going as planned and she‘s distraught at her situation, unable to find her way out. A fast paced story, with a lovely interconnected plot, and a very satisfying conclusion.

I finished one from the on-going reading pile so I‘m adding a different one. Can‘t let those numbers get reasonable or anything. LOL!

There is a thing about growing up as a high-achiever that makes young adulthood kind of unbearable in how it really shows you your limitations and the lack of control you have over your life, and I think this book captures it well. It‘s hard to see it as an opportunity when you‘re in the middle of it, of course, sometimes even well after you‘re young anymore. But it is, and i appreciated that here, too. I enjoyed this book. (CW: self-harm)

A Millennial fresh out of college with a finance degree gets hired by a selective NYC bank and on the day she‘s to begin, the bank crashes. It‘s 2009 and the novel explores her entitlement and disappointment as she goes viral as “Sad Millennial”, suffers under employment, self harm, poor dating choices, and her parents‘ breakup. #ARC #audiobook #Netgalley

This debut came out this month and follows a recent college grad in the aftermath of the 2009 financial collapse. Funny at parts, wise at others, but TWs for self harm.

LOL! She thinks she‘s having problems at her age. Imagine being in your seventies and trying to do eye makeup on the eye that does not have the worse cataract! Oh, to be young again and simply mess up my makeup! 😃 I had to laugh at the “tired raccoon”.

Yep! There is. Find that cream cheese, and spread it on the bagel before it becomes cold and rock hard! 😂

This first novel by Elizabeth Gonzalez James seems as if it‘s going to be a fun read. The story, about a #Tucson #millennial woman who recently graduated from college yet still remains among the #unemployed, is brought alive by the author‘s crisp, funny writing. Thank you, #sfwp, for the advanced uncorrected proof of this book.
