Hyperion
Hyperion | Friedrich Holderlin
4 posts | 4 read | 3 to read
Hyperion is a novel of stirring lyricism, philosophical sublimity, and enduring influence. It stands among Hlderlins most extraordinary achievements. A Greek hermit recounts the pivotal phases of his life, from his discovery of the vanished glory of antiquity, through his encounter with his beloved Diotima, who embodies his goal of merging with "the All of nature," to his participation in a Greek uprising against Ottoman Turkish tyranny. Hlderlins sole novel has been celebrated for its musicality, the power of its cadences and tones to express a constant oscillation between extremes of grief and joy. Though Hlderlins genius was not widely recognized during his lifetime, he has come to be regarded as one of the most significant and unique poets in the German language.

The #Reading1001 group on #Goodreads are reading two German books this month. Because the English translation was so expensive and English translations of German bug me anyway, and since this is a short book and I have more enthusiasm than sense, I decided to try reading it in the original. 😬 It's only 6pg per day... Only I didn't think to check if German has changed much since 1797. 🧐 Has it? Wish me luck, and fortitude. 😅

eeclayton I read a lot of books in original (not German though, but in English, I'm Hungarian btw) and the older texts can be challenging. Good luck for your book! 🙂 3y
Leniverse @eeclayton Thanks! I'm Norwegian, but live in the UK and I'm fluent in English. If anything I'd find a Norwegian book from around 1800 harder going than an English one. Norwegian spelling has changed a lot in 200 years, English not so much. Not sure about German. So far so good, but I've only just started. 😅 3y

The Spouse: More books?! All those books you got at Christmas that you haven't even opened, and you're already buying more?
Me: I needed this one!
The Spouse: You have so many unread books!
Me: Ah! But not in German! This one is in German. So I needed it.
Spouse: You need another set of book shelves. Which means a bigger house.
Me: I know, right! 😃

(I should probably intercept the post as I have two more books on the way - in English) 🤣
