The Man on the Street: a completely addictive crime thriller for fans of Ian Rankin and Robert Galbraith | Trevor Wood

GRITTY, NEWCASTLE-SET CRIME FOR FANS OF IAN RANKIN AND ROBERT GALBRAITH. LONGLISTED FOR THE CWA JOHN CREASEY DAGGER AND A THEAKSTON'S NEW BLOOD AUTHOR FOR 2020. 'Fresh, original, authentic and gritty - should be an instant classic' LEE CHILD 'Intricate, expertly paced with a shocking conclusion ... Jimmy is a character you root for from page one ... Simply supberb' M. W. CRAVEN, author of THE PUPPET SHOW It started with a splash. Jimmy, a homeless veteran grappling with PTSD, did his best to pretend he hadn't heard it - the sound of something heavy falling into the Tyne at the height of an argument between two men on the riverbank. Not his fight. Then he sees the headline: GIRL IN MISSING DAD PLEA. The girl, Carrie, reminds him of someone he lost, and this makes his mind up: it's time to stop hiding from his past. But telling Carrie, what he heard - or thought he heard - turns out to be just the beginning of the story. The police don't believe him, but Carrie is adamant that something awful has happened to her dad and Jimmy agrees to help her, putting himself at risk from enemies old and new. But Jimmy has one big advantage: when you've got nothing, you've got nothing to lose.

Last weekends reading included the discovery of a new crime series, which is always great if you enjoy the plot and characters, which I did. In this, Jimmy is a homeless former veteran who witnesses a crime one Newcastle night. The subsequent story explores life on the streets as Jimmy tries to help the victims daughter resolve the mystery, but Jimmy's back story suggests he may be a suspect. Definitely will read the next one soon.

And with tonight being Twelfth Night, here‘s my favourite read from December, for Day 12 of #12BooksOf2022. A homeless war veteran makes an unlikely but interesting hero in the first of a trilogy from Trevor Wood.

@Andrew65

Andrew65 This is on my TBR, I really need to get to it. Thanks for playing along, it‘s been a good way to review the year. 2y

#WinterReadathonDailyChallenge

This may be cheating. I‘m claiming A Christmas Railway Murder as my favourite seasonal read, though there‘s very little really Christmassy in it. And Man on the Street was my favourite non-seasonal read.

Andrew65 That‘s unfortunately seems to be the case with a lot of Christmas books. I do love the Railway Detective series. (edited) 2y

#Movie2BookRecs @klou
Prompt: QuickSilver

I remember watching this movie when it first came out. Being in the wrong place at the wrong time is what I feel ties these two together.

Klou Great connection between the two! 2y

How am I the first to post about this book?! This one had me staying up late last night because I needed to finish the last quarter of the book. This is a fast-paced thriller with a different take on the flawed hero - a homeless Falklands veteran with severe PTSD.
