Deep into the Dark
Deep into the Dark: A Mystery | P. J. Tracy
9 posts | 7 read | 6 to read
New York Times bestseller P. J. Tracy returns with Deep into the Dark, a brand new series set in LA and featuring up-and-coming LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan and murder suspect Sam Easton. Sam Eastona true survivoris home from Afghanistan, trying to rebuild a life in his hometown of LA. Separated from his wife, bartending and therapy sessions are what occupy his days and nights. When friend and colleague Melody Traeger is beaten by her boyfriend, she turns to Sam for help. When the boyfriend turns up dead the next day, a hard case like Sam is the perfect suspect. But LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan, whose brother recently died serving overseas, is sympathetic to Sam's troubles, and can't quite see him as a killer. She's more interested in the secrets Melody might be keeping and the developments in another murder case on the other side of town. Set in an LA where real people live and work--not the superficial LA of Beverly Hills or the gritty underbelly of the city--Deep into the Dark features two really engaging, dynamic main characters and explores the nature of obsession, revenge, and grief. P. J. Tracy is known for her "fast, fresh, and funny" characters (Harlan Coben) and her "sizzling" plots (People); the Monkeewrench series was her first, set in Minneapolis and co-written with her mother. Now with Deep into the Dark she's on her ownand it's a home run.

Soft pick for me. The first in the Detective Margaret Nolan Series. This one wasn't really focused on her. More on two other characters that have people close to the killed. I will continue to read though.

Not a lot of twisty surprises in this mystery, but I enjoyed the characters. Sam Easton is a vet, scarred both externally and internally, by his service in Afghanistan. The author‘s description of his severe PTSD is harrowing. His coworker, and friend Melody carries her own scars. LAPD Detective Margaret Nolan and colleagues are investigating the murders of people dear to Sam & Melody, and there‘s a serial killer in play. 1st in a new series.

I am a huge PJ Tracy fan, but this book got a little long in the middle, and the ending was a head-scratcher, a brush-by, an “I‘m not quite sure how to tie this all up in the last bow,” disappointment. I also finished wondering who was the main character. There‘s real possibility in the characters, but they floundered a bit. It could become an excellent series, but it needs more focus. OTOH, if you haven‘t read “Monkeewrench” DO IT NOW!!!

I liked it enough, although I figured out the killer! That never happens! I definitely like her Monkeewrench series better.

I loved P.J. Tracy so I was very glad that I got the first of her new series as an arc. 1) this cover is gorgeous, 2) this was a dark read. Although the big reveal was easily figured out, this novel was still very good. It was a real in-depth look at PTSD, it‘s many causes and manifestations. The characters are well-rounded and while the detective was actually a secondary character, I can‘t wait to see more of her.

Get it 01/12/2021. ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️
