The Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano
The Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano | Donna Freitas
6 posts | 11 read | 4 to read
A deeply moving novel about a woman who thought she never wanted to be a mother--and the many ways that life can surprise us In every woman there are many stories . . . Rose Napolitano is fighting with her husband, Luke, about prenatal vitamins. She promised she'd take them, but didn't. He promised before they got married that he'd never want children, but now he's changed his mind. Their marriage has come to rest on this one question: Can Rose find it in herself to become a mother? Rose is a successful professor and academic. She's never wanted to have a child. The fight ends, and with it their marriage. But then, Rose has a fight with Luke about the vitamins--again. This time the fight goes slightly differently, and so does Rose's future as she grapples with whether she can indeed give up the one thing she thought she knew about herself. Can she reimagine her life in a completely new way? That reimagining plays out again and again in each of Rose's nine lives, just as it does for each of us as we grow into adulthood. What are the consequences of our biggest choices? How would life change if we let go of our preconceived ideas of ourselves and became someone completely new? Rose Napolitano's experience of choosing and then choosing again shows us in an utterly compelling way what it means, literally, to reinvent a life and, sometimes, become a different kind of woman than she ever imagined. A stunning novel about love, loss, betrayal, divorce, death, a woman's career and her identity, The Nine Lives of Rose Napolitano is about finding one's way into a future that wasn't the future one planned, and the ways that fate intercedes when we least expect it.

My partner picked this book out for me thinking I would like it, and I did end up liking it! I enjoyed the discussion on to have children or not, and even if you give your partner everything they want (or say they want) things will all workout how they are supposed to.

Not sure how Litsy gave this a 70% when all the reviews are positive. An interesting look at how different choices about motherhood impacted Rose‘s life. Confusing in parts but I enjoyed seeing how each decision opened and closed different opportunities for the characters. My daughters have chosen not to have children, and I so related to Rose‘s mother, who struggled between wanting grandchildren and just wanting her daughter to be happy.

A multiple-lives timeline-hopper book that explores what happens when Rose makes one decision: whether or not to have a baby. Some of the lives are “yes,” some are “no,” others are “not sure.” The writing is not stellar, but the passionate discussions this one can/will evoke makes it a good choice for book clubs.
And, I mean —look at that gorgeous cover.

A thoughtful book that examines a woman‘s choice to become a mother by introducing the reader to nine different versions of Rose Napolitano - versions that said yes, versions that said no, and versions that were never sure. This is a book made for book clubs, calling readers to discuss what it means to be a woman, and how society‘s changing expectations can challenge relationships while making others stronger.

I‘m glad I picked this up. It‘s very thought-provoking, how decisions can lead to various degrees of differences in a woman‘s life, and in this case, 9 potential outcome of a woman‘s life depending on how she react in one situation. This is an answer to a lot of what ifs, especially in a marriage life.

A solid 4 on this.

#Bookhaul! I went to my formerly local indie today and it was wonderful just to be there. I picked up the three books in the bottom row and the awesome owner let me shop the back room and pick up the ARCs in the top row. If you ever find yourself in Seaside, Oregon, be sure to stop in at Beach Books and tell Karen I sent you!
