Three Weeks in December
Three Weeks in December | Audrey Schulman
5 posts | 2 read | 3 to read
In 1899 Jeremy, a young engineer, leaves a small town in Maine to oversee the construction of a railroad across East Africa. In charge of hundreds of Indian laborers, he soon finds himself the reluctant hunter of two lions that are killing his men in almost nightly attacks on their camp. Plagued by fear, wracked with malaria and alienated by a secret he can tell no one, he takes increasing solace in the company of the African who helps him hunt. In 2000 Max, an American ethnobotonist, travels to Rwanda in search of an obscure vine that could become a lifesaving pharmaceutical. Stationed in the mountains, she closely shadows a family of gorillas, the last of their group to survive the encroachment of local poachers. Max bears a striking gift for understanding the ape's non-verbal communication, but their precarious solidarity is threatened as a violent rebel group from the nearby Congo draws close.

Pickpick

It's clear that Audrey Schulman loves research. In the afterword, she mentions that she read 70+ books to write this novel and provides a reading list, by topic, of the ones she recommends. (She provided a similar list at the end of Theory of Bastards.) Three Weeks in December benefits from her extensive research; it is rich with details that ring true. But at the same time, the story sometimes lacks focus.

vivastory Fantastic review. I'm hoping to read her sooner, rather than later. 2mo
batsy Great review. She sounds like a fascinating writer and I look forward to checking out her work. 2mo

Getting in a little reading while the child plays in the sandbox we made over the weekend (plastic kiddie pool w/ sand bought at a home improvement store). Best $30 I've ever spent. She's entranced and contained.

I'm enjoying this book a lot, but it needed a better editor. I've found several mistakes (repeated words, a date that didn't jive, etc). I don't mind a couple here and there, but it upsets the rhythm if there are too many.

Susannah I wish I could find something to entrance and contain my new young cat. He‘s driving me nuts. 😁 2mo
Reggie Does she make castles? 2mo
readordierachel @Reggie She's still pretty young, so she's more into dumping the sand on herself, then yelling "Mama look!" I think castles are a couple months away :) 2mo

Am surprised how much I enjoyed this book about an American supervising Indian workers building the railroad in 1899 British East Africa, about an American ethnobotanist and gorillas in Rwanda in 2000, and about progress vs preservation.

shawnmooney Sounds interesting! 3y
