5 posts | 5 read
Men in Black meets Janet Evanovichs Stephanie Plum in the new urban fantasy novel starring seer Makenna Fraser and her fellow agents at Supernatural Protection & Investigation. The agents of Supernatural Protection & Investigations (SPI) know that fighting evil is a full-time job, especially when a new designer drugwith mind-blowing side effectshits the streets... Its called Brimstone. And after the first few hits, youll see every supernatural beast sharing the sidewalk, train, or office with you. After that, youll start seeing the really scary stuff. Im Makenna Fraser, seer for the SPI. And the collateral damage caused by Brimstone is something Id like to unsee: dead drug dealers missing their heartsand souls. Because your local pusher doesnt stand a chance against the new cartel muscling its way into New York. And since the drug can only be produced with magic and molten brimstone fresh from Hell, that means a rift to the underworld is open somewhere in the city. And whennot ifthe cartel loses control of it, well... Its going to be Hell on earth. From the Paperback edition.

The first 2.5 books in the series (not trilogy like I thought) were okay, but it got better in this one. While there‘s still some annoying repetition, characters are settling in and some of the long-game action is playing out. Now I need to find the remaining four books - and, of course, the first four are mass markets and the last three are trade paper.

#BookwormProblems - I‘ve been reading these books off and on for years now. While I‘m reading I enjoy them (despite annoying cut-and-paste repetition) but don‘t feel the urge to come back to the series. I bought all three years ago, so when I got to this one I thought I could be done with it all. Except yesterday I found out the series continues, and now I have to fight conflicting urges of series completion and general meh-ness.

Book #3. I borrow from the library so don't always get series in order or complete. Still an okay series. This time she is still defying the odds & has a boyfriend who should have told the truth from the beginning but then there wouldn't have been a novel.

Mac is going to Hell...or at least Hell adjacent. This adventure picks up right after the last one and adds new dimensions (literally) to the SPI world. Drugs, demons, and diabolical maneuverings made me really want to give these characters all a nice calm faraway vacation by the end of the book. The series continues to experience great growth and to be a delight to read. The next one will be hitting the shelves in January. Can't wait!

A decent book, lots of excitement and good pacing, and the characters are great company for an afternoon/evening read. This book follows pretty much directly after the previous book, so I would suggest brushing up on the 2nd book of the series before you start this one. This is a good book for people who like light mysteries with some cool takes on classic fantasy and urban fantasy.
