A hit-and-run murder unearths a case of mistaken identity in this well-bred, well written and genuinely superior mystery by the Diamond Dagger winner (Kirkus Reviews). Early one morning in the quiet English village of Larking, the body of a woman named Mrs. Jenkins is found in the road. Miles away, her daughter, Henrietta, receives the bad news while working in the university library. Poor Mrs. Jenkins appears to have been the victim of a horrible car accident. When an autopsy proves not only that this was no accident but also that Mrs. Jenkins had never had a child, young Henriettas life is thrown upside down. If shes not Mrs. Jenkinss daughter, then who is she? Its up to Detective Inspector C. D. Sloan of the Calleshire police force to bring the murderer to justiceand a sense of order back to Henriettas life. Proclaimed by the New York Times in 1968 to be one of the years best books, Henrietta Who? is a first-order English whodunit thatll keep you guessing until the end.

Doing a re-read of Catherine Aird's Callshire Chronicles. Dating from the late 60's to 80's. She wrote classic British Detective stories. They tend to be very competent and entertaining and are a good option for those who enjoy Agatha Christie. On the negative side her personal politics and opinions do seep into the books and she is comes across as stuffy and Thatcherite.

mabell I‘m rereading them, also! And I‘m in the middle of Henrietta right now! Ha! I love Sloan and Crosby - Poor Crosby 😂 2mo

An old timey mystery featuring Inspector Sloan. For a short book the plot twist was well handled and surprising.

#2 in the Sloan & Crosby series, and a fun read.

A woman is found dead on a lonely village roadway, victim of a hit & run. What could be a sad but simple crime is complicated by the discovery that not only was the “accident” purposeful, but also that the woman could not have been the mother of her only daughter. Then who is Henrietta?
I found the dual investigations (By the police on side, and Henrietta herself on the other) to be very engaging.

What seems like a hit and run soon turns complicated. It‘s determined the victim never had children, so who‘s Henrietta? Henrietta is shocked to learn her mother isn‘t her mother after all.... Detective Sloan has a complicated case on his hands. If no one knows anything, how can he find out who Henrietta really is? Someone knew and killed to keep the secret.

British countryside mystery. Slightly dated language. Good plot.
