In a world of pagan traditions and deeply rooted love, a girl in jeopardy must save her family and community. A transporting historical novel by New York Times-bestselling author Cathy Marie Buchanan. It's the season of Fallow, in the era of iron. In a northern misty bog surrounded by woodlands and wheat fields, a settlement lies far beyond the reach of the Romans invading hundreds of miles to the southeast. Here, life is simple--or so it seems to the tightly knit community. Sow. Reap. Honor Mother Earth, who will provide at harvest time. A girl named Devout comes of age, sweetly flirting with the young man she's tilled alongside all her life, and envisions a future of love and abundance. Seventeen years later, though, the settlement is a changed place. Famine has brought struggle, and outsiders, with their foreign ways and military might, have arrived at the doorstep. For Devout's young daughter, life is more troubled than her mother ever anticipated. But this girl has an extraordinary gift. As worlds collide and peril threatens, it will be up to her to save her family and community. Set in a time long forgotten, Daughter of Black Lake brings the ancient world to life and introduces us to an unforgettable family facing an unimaginable trial.

I am posting one book per day from my to-be-read collection. No description and providing no reason for wanting to read it, I just do. Some will be old, some will be new - don‘t judge me I have a lot of books.
Join the fun if you want. This is day 152.

In between curriculum planning I manage to finish this surprisingly delightful novel this weekend. If you like pagan traditions and Druids being threatened by Roman rule then you‘re in for a treat. Set during the Roman invasion of Britannia, a tight community holds strong to each other while honoring Mother Earth.

Oh, how I loved this book! I was fairly certain I had the major things figured out by page 40 (print edition), like the exact identity of the druid visitor. I wouldn't expect many other people to figure it out because I have a set of specific interests that dovetail in this book. And it made me so happy. It's also an excellent and well written story

I really enjoyed this part fantasy/part historical fiction story that‘s full of Druids, conquering Romans, pagan rituals secrets & a little magic. At its heart, it‘s a coming of age story of Hobble, a 13-year-old field hand in a settlement in first-century Britannia who is also a Seer & her mother, Devout. A great atmospheric October read, here with a Warm Barley Salad with Herb Pesto inspired by my reading. Link to recipe & my review below.

An atmospheric tale (with a little bit of magic) set in the first century AD, when the Romans had started taking over Britain. I loved this book because it was interesting to see this story from the perspectives of those in Britannia rather than the soldiers from the Roman Empire. Great perspective on the day-to-day life of big dwellers and clanspeople. Unfolded slowly but it really sucked me in, and I really cared for these characters.

Today‘s finished Creamy Carrot Soup Topped with Caramelized Pumpkin Seeds & Herb Oil has a lot of flavor between the soup & the toppings. I replaced the butternut in Sami Tamimi‘s squash soup with carrots since I had them on hand & added a touch of coconut milk to make it creamy. It‘s shown here with one of my current reads for a book tour review this week. I‘m enjoying it so far.

Link to the vegan soup recipe & toppings is below.

BarbaraBB I made a similar soup today based on roasted carrots, with ginger, lemon and cashews. It was a big hit! So I‘ll make your variation next time! 4y
DebinHawaii @BarbaraBB That one sounds great with the roasted carrots! 🥕😋 4y
