This book was bizarre! I think Monique was an unnecessary character. The story didn't gain anything from her perspective. The magic was interesting and I enjoyed those characters. If this had been two separate books, following the main story & the other Reynato and 'family' I think it would have made for two amazing novels. Overall, being off-kilter balanced the intense nature of the rest of the story and it still felt worth the read.

Loved this book! The bulk of the story takes place in the Philippines. This also reminds me that I really really need to read his second book.
