You're strange and wrong. You've known it from the beginning. This is the voice that rings in your ears. Because you never say the right thing. You're a disappointment to everyone. You're a far cry from beautiful - and your thoughts are ugly too. You seem bound to fail, bound to break. But you know what it is to laugh with your best friend, to feel the first tentative tingles of attraction, to take exquisite pleasure in the affront of your unruly body. You just need to find your place. From dead pets and crashed cars to family traumas and misguided love affairs, Susannah Dickey's revitalizing debut novel plunges us into the private world of one young woman as she navigates her rocky way to adulthood.

Pickpick

A coming of age story with an usual structure that sees short episodes told from toddlerhood to late 20s. I thought it had some bite and was pretty raw in its depiction of growing up. There were funny parts but also some sad parts. Not sure about the epilogue though either @CarolynM 🧐

CarolynM Glad it wasn't just me 🙂 Maybe someone else will solve the riddle. 3y
JennyM @CarolynM and thank you ever so much for my Christmas card. Arrived yesterday and it was lovely to receive. Thankyou ❤️🎄 3y

Why is it that so many recent young-woman-comes-of-age novels feature MCs who can't talk about their feelings or seek help for their health problems, who are as fixated on bodily fluids as teenage boys & who only ever seem to have bad sex? I found this version of the story, told from the POV of the nameless MC, more convincing than others. She is a sympathetic character who genuinely matures over the 25yrs of the story.👇

CarolynM 🖕This is also the story of a long term friendship and I thought that relationship was portrayed very well. I think I would recommend this one @Reggie if you read it can you tell me what you think the epilogue means? I didn't understand it. TW for sexual assault. Reggie So funny story. I thought this book was that one romance about the 40 year old woman who falls for her tennis instructor. Still.....Great review and I will read it and get back to you! 4y
JennyM This one sounds good. I just finished A lonely Girl. I get why it‘s got a lot of buzz around it, but I just found it really sad and not much else. 4y

CarolynM @Reggie Easy mistake to make🙂I'll have to look out for that other Tennis Lessons. I've just realised I have no idea why this book has that title. Something else about it I don't understand 🙄 4y
CarolynM @JennyM It was sad, but I didn't have a lot of sympathy for that girl, she treated other people pretty badly. 4y
TheAromaofBooks Great progress!! 4y
Ruthiella Not only why the are so many novels with female MC with these characteristics but why am I so drawn to them? I will definitely put this on my list! 4y
CarolynM @Ruthiella If you email your address to munchenberg at on the dot net dot au I'll send my copy to you. I don't have room on the shelf for it😆 4y
Ruthiella @CarolynM That‘s OK Carolyn. I can buy it locally. It would be too expensive to send from Australia to California. 4y
CarolynM @Ruthiella Well, I will just have to find someone else to rehome it🙂 4y
LapReader How about me? 3y
CarolynM @LapReader I think that could be arranged🙂 3y

Mehso-so

This is billed as a raw, gritty, growing up tale. I could empathise with the MC, who was a bit of a loner, bullied and always just on the outside of everything. However it was a bit too ‘gritty‘ for me - too much sick, poo and blood and the sex scenes were weirdly gynaecological.

It was also told in the 2nd person, which didn‘t work for me.

On the plus side - another #bookspinbingo and it‘s taken my #netgalley to over 80% - yay!

rockpools 🎉 Congratulations on NetGalley! I still *can‘t* get over 69% - and I‘m really trying! 4y
