Felicity Carrol and the Murderous Menace
Felicity Carrol and the Murderous Menace: A Felicity Carrol Mystery | Patricia Marcantonio
4 posts | 3 read
Heiress and amateur detective Felicity Carrol makes a perilous journey to apprehend a notorious murderer who has terrorized England--and now continues his vicious killing spree across the pond. Felicity Carrol would rather be doing just about anything other than attending balls or seeking a husband. What she really wants to do is continue her work using the latest forensic methods and her photographic memory to help London police bring murderers to justice, so when her friend, Scotland Yard Inspector Jackson Davies, weak from injury, discovers a murder in a wild mining town in Montana that echoes the terrible crimes in England, Felicity decides to go herself. In Placer, Montana, her first obstacle is handsome lawman Thomas Pike, who uses his intuition as much as his Colt in keeping law and order in this unruly town. When the murderer strikes again, Felicity begins to suspect Davies is correct: Jack the Ripper has come to America. Felicity sets out to find the killer in a town chock full of secrets, shadows, and suspects, but as the body count rises, this intrepid sleuth faces her most dangerous adversary yet--and discovers that not all killers are as they seem.

ARC from long ago.

Honestly, I didn't much care for the mystery.

I had hoped to find a heroine similar to the ones in the lady detective books by Sherry Thomas or Deanna Raybourn. I found lots of tell with no show, and a pale main character that might only stick with me because I rolled my eyes and tutted at the book so often.

robinb I had several issues with this one as well. 4y
julesG @robinb I wanted to list them all and then thought I just don't want to put my energy into ranting about a book. 4y
robinb @julesG Characters and writing were the biggies for me. 4y

GingerAntics I‘m struggling with a book that‘s really good despite the telling and no showing. The story is great, but reading it is getting harder and harder. 4y
julesG @robinb I was waiting for Little Miss University Degrees to actually show us some of her skills and use her logical brain. 🙄 Granted, I recently read the latest Veronica Speedwell book, so it had a lot to live up to. 4y
robinb @julesG Yes, I kind of took it as an example that not ALL mystery heroines are created equal. 🤣🤷🏻‍♀️ Veronica is a very hard act to follow for sure. 👍 4y
julesG @robinb I was annoyed at Felicity from the start. She goes to visit Jackson Davies, who is important to her, she reminds him of having a degree in medicine, but when he has a coughing fit she calls for his mother for help?! WTF? Are you a doctor or not? I'd have expected action, her trying to make him feel better right then, not lectures about solving cases. 4y
robinb @julesG And if I remember correctly (it‘s been awhile), the writing was just choppy and abrupt...just not up to par for me. 4y
julesG @robinb Yep. Writing was not good. I was wondering how the author managed to get a third book into the pipeline. 4y
Hooked_on_books When I get to serious eye rolling, I usually bail. That‘s often my cue to self that things are not good! 4y
julesG @Hooked_on_books I persevered because it was an ARC. Might have bailed otherwise. 4y

Bailedbailed

Super hard time getting through this book; it felt so smug! I thought I would love it; I mean, rich lady detective who sort of bucks traditional and does good with her money and a smidge if romance....what‘s not to love? But reading this was such a chore for me and the whole time I felt smugness radiating from the pages.

Mehso-so

An interesting premise. Jack the Ripper turns up in a mining town in Montana after his murderous spree in London. Felicity Carrol, a young woman left ridiculously wealthy by her cold, remote father, is asked by her ailing friend, Inspector Davies of Scotland Yard, to investigate.
I wanted to like this more, but the writing lacked depth and was choppy. I also did not connect with any of the characters. While I did guess the killer‘s identity,⬇️

robinb the story itself was just OK. This is the second in series (and I did not read the first), but I don‘t have any motivation to continue with it. I‘ve read better, and there‘s just so far an interesting premise can take you without great writing to back it up. 🤷🏻‍♀️ 3/5⭐️ (edited) 4y
