Long Range | C. J. Box

#1 New York Times bestseller C.J. Box returns with a blazing new Joe Pickett novel, in which the Wyoming game warden must investigate a murder that happens on his turf--a murder committed from a confoundingly long distance. The wife of a prominent local judge is shot and killed on Wyoming game warden Joe Pickett's turf. But as Joe investigates, all signs point to the shot having been taken from an impossibly long distance. Joe has seen a lot in his time as warden, but he's never seen a killing like this. How could the shooting have been arranged? And who else is in the cross hairs? At the same time--just as he's adjusting to the arrival of a new baby, his first child--Joe's best friend Nate Romanowski is attempting to decipher a startling grizzly attack in the area. Beset by threats both man-made and natural, the two men must go to great lengths to figure out how to keep their loved ones safe.

Not a bad book, just not my personal preference on a setting or storyline. Midwesterner cowboys have to solve a murder of a judge‘s wife. The judge suspects a former miscreant he sentenced was aiming the bullet at him, not his wife. The local doctor may not be who he seems and has a mysterious reason for being the cause of chaos and destruction around him. Glad I stuck through the book, but probably won‘t read more of CJ Box.

Another good Joe Pickett novel. As this is like #20 of 21 (as of now) I feel like a good reading requires some background. The book could be read alone but it wouldn‘t be as enjoyable as being the 20th book read. The characters have developed over time and storylines have gotten more connected. I will likely read number 21 soon and then wait for more to be written!

2.5/5 Quite disappointed... The plot in itself is okay, but it felt quite cheesy and unrealistic to me.

What I enjoyed most about this book was the dialogue. There was a lot of technical information about guns and hunting that I could have done without. It was a good story with a tricky plot. The characters were enjoyable and believable. ⭐⭐⭐
