The Sweet, Terrible, Glorious Year I Truly, Completely Lost It
The Sweet, Terrible, Glorious Year I Truly, Completely Lost It | Lisa Shanahan
6 posts | 2 read | 2 to read
IN MY FAMILY, when anyone rides the wave of their emotions, we say they're chucking a birkett. When the emotion drives out all common sense, we say they're chucking a big one. The telltale signs are: flaming cheeks, shortness of breath, bulging eyes, and a prolonged illogical outburst. Gemma Stone is convinced that it's always unseemly to chuck a birkett and that it's actually insane to chuck one in front of a complete stranger. But that was before she fell for a boy who barely knows she exists, before she auditioned for the school play, before she met the family of freaks her sister Debbie is marrying into, before the unpredictable Raven De Head took an interest in her, and before she realized that at the right time and for the right reason, a birkett could be a beautiful thing. From the Hardcover edition.

Name a book that you hesitated on because the cover was awful but turned out to be an incredible read?

This is mine.
Took me forever to track down a copy as it is out of print - but it was either find my own or steal the libraries copy (and that would be wrong)

ravenlee Any movie tie-in cover ever. 5y

So happy to have found this one. I read it several years ago and loved it. Found some other fun ones too.

Sequel, please! For #RiotGrams... or a birkett may be thrown!

This fairly hideous cover hides a pretty perfect book, I‘m hoping it gets another go with a more appealing cover! #loveozya

When Debbie told Dad that she was marrying Brian, her new boyfriend of one month, Dad went ballistic.
'Not Brian!' He leapt from his chair. 'Anybody but Brian. I'd prefer that bloke who stole and hocked my tennis trophies... what was his name?'
'His name was Bruce, Dad,' said Debbie, with a sniff. 'And he didn't steal your trophies. You gave them away to St Vinnies.'

Could this *be* any more Aussie!? Even though I've lived Down Under all my life - I'd never come across the term 'birkett' (to chuck a birkett - you must stop caring about what other people think and just start telling it like it is) One of my best finds for this year - with characters that I was genuinely sad to close the book on 💜💜💜 Also published as 'The Sweet Glorious Year I Truly, Completely Lost It. #LoveOzYa 🇦🇺

That cover though 😂

Sue I've never heard that term either! Sounds like fun! 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag The outfit on the cover is what her big sister makes her wear to her wedding... It gives new meaning to the word 'bridezilla' 😂 @Sue 8y
Sue Oh wow!! 😂 8y
thegirlwiththelibrarybag I'd never even heard of this author before (she's better known for picture books) but I took part in a #LoveOzYa book challenge on IG earlier this year and discovered this as a result @Sue 8y
Treatyoshelf I really liked this one. 8y
