A heart-stopping, chilling thriller about an abducted girl, the boy who can save her and the terrifying cat-and-mouse game of deception and betrayal that they are playing. "If you've only just arrived . . . then why do you want to leave?" Elissa arrived in Memory Wood on the most important day of her life. The thirteen-year-old chess prodigy was competing at the English Youth Grand Prix when she was snatched, and then woke up in a makeshift cell underground. Elijah has lived beside Memory Wood for as long as he can remember. He's only twelve but he's spent his life so far exploring every inch of it, and that's how he finds Elissa. When he appears in her cell, Elissa assumes Elijah will help her; that he'll go to the police and give them the answers they desperately need. But Elijah doesn't want her to leave. As her abductor's behaviour becomes increasingly erratic, Elijah's company is soon her only source of relief and Elissa realizes that this strange, lonely boy is her one hope for survival. Drawing on all her resilience and powers of logic to outwit him, their deadly game of cat and mouse, of deception and betrayal, but also their bond of friendship, will determine both their fates. . . .

An intense and terrifying read.
It‘s Summer in the book, but this gloomy winter picture accutately sums up the mood of the book.

Overall I enjoyed reading The Memory Wood - but I have to admit to needing to go back and reread some parts. My poor brain got somewhat confused at times but there was so much going on and changing between characters that I think that is understandable. Or maybe I‘m getting old lol. Anyway it has suspense, mystery and all the good things a thriller needs so a pick from me.

Wasn't a fan of this book. It was clumsy, disjointed and without depth. The story could've been decent if it had been edited. The 'twist' was convoluted & overly difficult. Elissa's character was decent but didn't go anywhere. Police woman storyline was pointless and as Amy in Big Bang said about Indiana Jones without her the outcome of the book would be the same. A quick read that I couldn't empathise with and didn't get lost in. Disappointing.

The story starts off dramatically and it only eases slightly before picking up again. It twists as it develops. One minute you think you know what's going on then bang another twist is thrown at you. Some I predicted but others took me completely by surprise which is always good. I found Mairead's personal story a hard undercurrent that I wanted to have a happy ending. The ending was so well written and finished the story brilliantly #Netgalley 5*

Told from 3 viewpoints this is more than your run of the mill crime drama. A clever twist turns it into something else, but I feel the ending went on a little too long. 4🌟

Thanks to NetGalley & publishers, Random House UK, Transworld Publishers / Bantam Press, for the opportunity to read an ARC. #NetGalley
