Rain and Embers
Rain and Embers | Ali Nuri
4 posts | 1 read | 11 to read
A raw and unfiltered debut, Rain and Embers explores far-reaching themes of migration, asylum-seeking, trauma, abuse, racism, religion, philosophy, intimacy, love, loss, forgiveness, and redemption. Ali Nuri was born in the southern marshlands of Iraq at the height of the Iran-Iraq War to a Shia family. As a persecuted religious sect, they were attacked by the tyrannical government under Saddam Hussein and fled across the desert to escape. He spent his childhood reeling from the trauma of being uprooted and forced to migrate. Ali survived four years in a refugee camp in Saudi Arabia before being granted asylum by the United States at the age of 7. Growing up with dyslexia as a non-native English speaker in the West and trading one oppression for another, the pervasive feeling of otherness drew him to writing as a means of expression. Equal parts intimate self-portrait and universal rumination, Rain and Embers paints a vivid picture of life as an Iraqi refugee in post-9/11 America.

ElaineR Never mind the book, that coffee looks sublime! 4y
nuriali @ElaineR haha, pride myself on my ability to make unearthly coffee! I used Colombian medium roasted coffee beans, edible rose petals, and honey, and put them all in a french press. Oh, y'all need milk and a pump milk frother (Amazon 10 bucks) and then you're ready to serve, put a few petals ontop like above! No one is going to love you like you love you ❣️ 4y
ElaineR @AliNuri I'm even more impressed now I know you made it yourself. Sounds delicious. Also, "No one is going to love you like you love you". Ain't that the truth. 4y
