Indigo
Indigo: In Search of the Color That Seduced the World | Catherine E. McKinley
7 posts | 3 read | 6 to read
For almost five millennia, in every culture and in every major religion, indigo-a blue pigment obtained from the small green leaf of a parasitic shrub through a complex process that even scientists still regard as mysterious-has been at the center of turbulent human encounters. Indigo is the story of this precious dye and its ancient heritage: its relationship to slavery as the "hidden half" of the transatlantic slave trade, its profound influence on fashion, and its spiritual significance, which is little recognized but no less alive today. It is an untold story, brimming with rich, electrifying tales of those who shaped the course of colonial history and a world economy. But Indigo is also the story of a personal quest: Catherine McKinley is the descendant of a clan of Scots who wore indigo tartan as their virile armor; the kin of several generations of Jewish "rag traders"; the maternal granddaughter of a Massachusetts textile factory owner; and the paternal granddaughter of African slaves-her ancestors were traded along the same Saharan routes as indigo, where a length of blue cotton could purchase human life. McKinley's journey in search of beauty and her own history ultimately leads her to a new and satisfying path, to finally "taste life." With its four-color photo insert and sumptuous design, Indigo will be as irresistible to look at as it is to read.

Bailedbailed

Ugh. I don't know if it's because I'm reading books I wouldn't normally read, or if the books just aren't any good, but I'm in a slump right now. I don't recall this ever happening before. ☹ I bailed on the tagged book, am still pushing through the other two, but think I'll take a breather to read something fun before I come back to them.

On the BookRiot podcast they mentioned that Indigo was planning to open a store in New Jersey next summer. I was curious if any Canadian Littens had any opinions about Indigo to share. Barnes & Noble, IMO, needs to up their game. The stores I have visited feel tired, and maybe a competitor would force them to shake things up a little.

xicanti I like Indigo, but I'd like them a whole lot more if their giftware weren't so expensive. I mostly shop their bargain section, or order from their extensive online Funko Pop selection whenever they offer free shipping with no minimum. 6y
AlaMich @xicanti I seem to remember reading somewhere—though I could be wrong—that Indigo does much less non-book merch than B&N (re your giftware comment) 6y
xicanti @AlaMich it's a couple years since I've been to the US, but the last time I was in a Barnes & Noble they had WAY less giftware than Indigo. Indigo's really stepped up their game in that area over the last year or so. They commission basic designs and apply them to all sorts of stuff: stationery, accessories, mugs, prints, baby necessities, home decor, etc. I think one of their Toronto stores isn't even primarily a bookstore anymore. 6y
xicanti They've got a big kids division, too. Some of the Ontario stores partnered with American Girl a couple years ago, but I don't know if that's still in place. 6y
