Black Night's Gonna Catch Me Here
Black Night's Gonna Catch Me Here: New and Selected Poems | James Sallis
5 posts | 1 read | 6 to read
Poetry. Literary Nonfiction. "The world has long been full of praise for Jim Sallis's crime novels' poetic prose and richly-described landscapes. It is time that we simply call Sallis a poet, one who depicts and reveals our inner landscape. These poems [in BLACK NIGHT'S GONNA CATCH ME HERE] are both musical and plainspoken; they do not employ 'exalted speech' (as he says, 'we fought it. Took barrooms / home to bed, the American idiom, real warts / on imaginary frogs') but instead use language for the best reasons, to 'find beauty, try to understand, survive.'"Katrina Vandenberg

I didn't want this one to end. The poems here are astonishing- visions of a soft apocalypse, then jumping into the past to walk with figures like Trotsky, Marx, and surrealists. By the end, I was left shaken, as if the world had cracked open and revealed its true face. Just astonishing work here.

James Sallis at dusk. If you saw the RyRy Gosling movie DRIVE, Sallis wrote the excellent novel it was based on. This is from a poem called "Letters," and like a lot of the poems in this collection, it hits me in the feels. But I am aquatic at ❤️, so I will eat up any beautiful writing about ?.

JillMoore1226 He lives here in Phoenix and I almost took a creative writing class with him. I shoulda...he's awesome. ❤️ 8y
Lizpixie I love this so much. And Drive is one of my favourite movies, it's so atmospheric. 8y

A small stack for TBR Tuesday, all things considered. Putting Different Class on the back burner in hopes of knocking out some comics/photo books/poetry.

Bkwurm I've been adding more poetry into my reading life this summer too. Please share your favs. I'm always looking for something new. 😊 8y
