Hate Inc: How, and Why, the Media Makes Us Despise One Another | Matt Taibbi
29 posts | 7 read | 2 reading | 5 to read
Part tirade, part confessional from the celebratedRolling Stone journalist,Hate Inc. reveals that what most people think of as "the news" is, in fact, a twisted wing of the entertainment business In this characteristically turbocharged new book, celebratedRolling Stone journalist Matt Taibbi provides an insider's guide to the variety of ways today's mainstream media tells us lies. Part tirade, part confessional, it reveals that what most people think of as "the news" is, in fact, a twisted wing of the entertainment business. In the Internet age, the press have mastered the art of monetizing anger, paranoia, and distrust. Taibbi, who has spent much of his career covering elections in which this kind of manipulative activity is most egregious, provides a rich taxonomic survey of American political journalism's dirty tricks. Heading into a 2020 election season that promises to be a Great Giza Pyramid Complex of invective and digital ugliness,Hate Inc. will be an invaluable antidote to the hidden poisons dished up by those we rely on to tell us what is happening in the world.

By this time most are aware of journalism‘s role in dividing the country. Media that now caters to its audience rather than presenting unbiased news. CNN caters to its base. FOX NEWS caters to its base. MSNBC caters to its base. And we are left with a nation who thinks it‘s own people are the enemy. This book makes the pint very well. However, I didn‘t finish the whole book. Because I‘m sick of the subject and I sick of the hatred.

A fascinating perspective on corporate news media, on how it has transformed from “news” to “entertainment”, increasingly becoming more focused on profits than integrity. A dispiriting read at times, but an important one.

About 100 pages into this. So far, I‘ve found it to be a fascinating and insightful breakdown of how corporate profit-motives undermine even the most well-meaning journalism. Highly recommended. #politics

Terrific. This is the fifth book I've read by Matt Taibbi, and with the exception of Insane Clown President, this one is my favorite.

Why use the most advanced communications technology in history to teach people basic geography, or how World Bank structural adjustment lending works, when we can instead show people idiots drinking donkey semen for money?

When you look back at the generation of Heathers-style coverage, the evolution of Trump starts to make sense. We can excuse almost anything in America except losing. And we love a freak show.

I could quibble with Taibbi's paragraphing, with the odd typo, and with the fact that the author makes moves he castigates others for even as he swears that he is atoning for them--and this would still be an important read if you care about the media's downward spiral (and ours). Honestly, someone has to have the guts to broach all of this.
