Engstrom delivers the same over-the-top cruelty and horror as in When Darkness Loves Us which gradually escalates to a bloodbath that is at once shocking and exactly what you‘d expect. That being said, the writing is good! There are some delectable lines in here, esp when Angelina rhapsodizes about the Night. Engstrom is gifted at creating atmosphere: Cold, lonely highways; seedy bus stations; truck stop diners.
