The Ballad of Peckham Rye | Muriel Spark
5 posts | 6 read | 2 to read
A slender satirical gem from the master of malice and mayhem (The New York Times) The Ballad of Peckham Rye is a wickedly farcical tale of an English factory town turned upside-down by a Scot who may or may not be in league with the Devil. Dougal Douglas is hired to do human research into the lives of the workers, Douglas stirs up mutiny and murder.

My sister and I listened to this #audiobook during our road trip today. We found it amusing and weird and were left scratching our heads a bit at the end. It opens with a 17-year old bride left at the altar, the characters are fascinating... and that‘s it. Entertaining social satire.

I love her writing style. This was my first Muriel Spark. Dougal Douglas is quite the character. 3.5⭐️The first book I've read this year that's older than me. Lol Written in 1960.

JanuarieTimewalker13 @Bette , @CatLass007, @CoffeeCatsBooks I love the amount of feline devotion on Litsy. Maybe it's bc they're the happiest when we read! Best companions❤️ That's my Xena❤️ I felt a little bad using her as a book rest but the book is extremely light, and she didn't seem to mind. 7y
ValerieAndBooks I enjoyed this one! I have a few more of hers in my TBR. 7y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @ValerieAndBooks I definitely want to read more of hers too, especially The Driver's Seat!! 7y
Booksnchill @JanuarieTimewalker13 @ValerieAndBooks I just today got The Drivers Seat from the library- meant to read it over lunch but people wanted to talk to me- aaarrghhh!! 6y
JanuarieTimewalker13 @Booksnchill looking forward to your opinion!! 6y

Finished this yesterday for Letter S #LitsyAtoZ. Seems to be typical Muriel Spark and leaves things open-ended for the reader to guess at. Is Dougal Douglas (aka Douglas Dougal) really associated with the devil, as he says he is? He comes to town on the premise of doing research for a local firm, but really why? I enjoyed this, although I think it's probably not one of Spark's strongest works.

This is the Spark I decided on. I picked it because it's the shortest 🤷‍♀️. I just want to finish the Litsy A to Z challenge already 😁!

merelybookish I know! I'm down to my last four letters. 7y
vivastory How many more books before you finish the challenge? 7y
zsuzsanna_reads My favourite from her is 7y

ValerieAndBooks @merelybookish you're doing great👏👍!! 7y
ValerieAndBooks @vivastory including this one, eight more. But that's because I have the self-imposed challenge of doing it alphabetically/author only (with other books in between of course). How about you? 7y
ValerieAndBooks @zsuzsanna_reads I was considering that book also 😊. I think next time I'm in a Spark mood, I'll pick up that one. 7y
vivastory @ValerieAndBooks I lost my list. I remember most of the list, but I don't think I'll finish. The only challenge I'm determined to complete this year is finishing all of Shirley Jackson's fiction 7y
ValerieAndBooks How's the Shirley Jackson challenge going? @vivastory 7y
vivastory @ValerieAndBooks excellent! So far I've read her first three & The Haunting of Hill House. She definitely improved with each publication. I'm eager to get to We Have Always Lived in the Castle & her short stories. I suspect they'll join my favorite books. 7y
ValerieAndBooks @vivastory 👏👍. I have a couple of hers in my TBR and feel like late fall would be a good time for me to get to them. 7y
tpixie Good luck 🍀 7y
ValerieAndBooks @tpixie thanks 😊! I'm almost done with this one. 7y

This week's book haul. Bottom two are from Prime Day; currently reading The Flame Alphabet (conveniently also Letter M for #LitsyAtoZ). Top four are from when I took books in for trade and I just had to bring those home 😊.
