In this passage, a group of Jews are contemplating whether or not there really is or will be the “World to Come”. I love how the author expresses their doubt.

“Did they really have to kill us all?”

In this novel, all the #Jews in one #Polish village are murdered.

...as if there is ever a reason for #genocide.

I‘d never heard of this book or it‘s author before. I found it a while ago at #TheBookThingofBaltimore. It looked interesting so I grabbed it. I‘d just finished a light, funny book so I was in the mood for reading something deeper. I‘m a quarter of the way through this book, and deeper it is. Based in wartime #Poland with its #Jewish population dead, this book is both horrifying & imaginative. It‘s quite different from other wartime novels.

“He turns his head, squinting through a hard yellow eye...”

What?! Crows don‘t have yellow eyes! Their eyes are blue-gray when young, turning to dark brown as they age.

In this novel, Polish soldiers murder all the Jews in their village. The Rebbe (religious teacher) becomes a crow in an imaginative world of the dead. I just became friends with a real crow. Now I‘m going to think he is really a Rebbe! 😲
