On the Plain of Snakes
On the Plain of Snakes: A Mexican Journey | Paul Theroux
5 posts | 2 read | 4 to read
Legendary travel writer Paul Theroux drives the entire length of the US-Mexico border, then goes deep into the hinterland, on the back roads of Chiapas and Oaxaca, to uncover the rich, layered world behind today's brutal headlines. Paul Theroux has spent his life crisscrossing the globe in search of the histories and peoples that give life to the places they call home. Now, as immigration debates boil around the world, Theroux has set out to explore a country key to understanding our current discourse: Mexico. Just south of the Arizona border, in the desert region of Sonora, he finds a place brimming with charm, yet visibly marked by both the US Border Patrol looming to the north and mounting discord from within. With the same humanizing sensibility he employed in Deep South, Theroux stops to talk with residents, visits Zapotec mill workers in the highlands, and attends a Zapatista party meeting, communing with people of all stripes who remain south of the border even as their families brave the journey north. From the writer praised for his "curiosity and affection for humanity in all its forms" (New York Times Book Review), On the Plain of Snakes is an exploration of a region in conflict.

3.5/5

Very good travelogue, very well-written touching on interesting subjects: traditions, poverty, crime, immigration, family, etc.

More than a travelogue, it's a book of encounters. Paul Theroux shares the stories of people he meets along the way.

It was a very slow read for me, I could only read a few pages at a time (not sure why). I loved when he referred to other books. The only thing missing for me was a map...

The book is ready, my spicy chai tea latte is ready, but is my brain ready!?

Libby1 If I were reading this I would just keep thinking of Snakes on a Plane! 8mo

Theroux has been a travel writer most of his life, over the age of 70 he returned to Mexico, an old Gringo. He visits many border towns ravaged by Cartels, with NAFTA factories creating slums but not great jobs.He goes deeper ,Mexico City , Oaxaca, meets w/Zapatistas.Theroux loves people, their stories vital to the story he tells. The diversity of cultures , people ,leads me to believe you could go many times yet learn something new w/ every visit

#BiblioMAYnia #SetInMexico I‘ve enjoyed Therouxs books though haven‘t read all of them.He always looks below the surface, a traveler not a tourist.Still on my TBR.
