Little Tales of Misogyny
Little Tales of Misogyny | Patricia Highsmith
6 posts | 8 read | 7 to read
Long out of print, this Highsmith classic resurfaces with a vengeance. The great revival of interest in Patricia Highsmith continues with the publication of this legendary, cultish short story collection. With an eerie simplicity of style, Highsmith turns our next-door neighbors into sadistic psychopaths, lying in wait among white picket fences and manicured lawns. In the darkly satiric, often mordantly hilarious sketches that make up Little Tales of Misogyny, Highsmith upsets our conventional notions of female character, revealing the devastating power of these once familiar creatures"The Dancer," "The Female Novelist," "The Prude"who destroy both themselves and the men around them. This work attesets to Highsmith's reputation as "the poet of apprehension" (Graham Greene).

11-16-21: My 116th finished book of 2021! What a weird little book of short stories about different types of women. Women who destroy men and women who destroy themselves. Women who notch up their conquests and women who go to far. I love a good Highsmith novel but didn‘t really love these stories. There wasn‘t any of the Highsmith suspense. ⭐️⭐️ 👍🏼📖#️⃣1️⃣1️⃣6️⃣

"Barbara had organized it with her college chum Fran, whose family Pamela knew."
-"The Middle-Class Housewife"
Highsmith really knows how to make an innocuous sentence ugly, and laborious to subvocalize. The dull, toneless clangor of family-social life is what I hear in that one.

So many greats!
Also I came across this interesting link about LGBTQ authors in places where it is illegal. I come from a country where it is technically illegal (although seldom enforced) and recently an annual LGBTQ event was slapped w new rules like no foreigners or foreign sponsorship, more security, & it made me 😡

Pickpick

This book of short stories would be perfect for a book club that doesn't mind dark and unsettling humor. It's a very quick read, Highsmith spares no words as she skewers the characters in her book which includes, but is not limited to, a happy cave woman. It would also lead to a lot of discussion. Is this a book of misogyny, or a satire of stereotypical womanhood? Each story can be interpreted in many ways. #24in48 #readathon ⭐️⭐️⭐️⭐️

Dorianna @BookishFeminist right? I had to see what this is all about. This is my first time reading Patricia Highsmith and I clearly did not know what I was getting myself into. 8y
