Footfalls in Memory
Footfalls in Memory: Reflections from Solitude | Terry Waite
2 posts | 2 to read
For the first year of his solitary confinement in Beirut, Terry Waite was given nothing to read. During those days, not only did he write his autobiography in his head, but he also attempted to remember all the books, poems and prayers he had read during his life. Eventually his guards mellowed and he was given books. He received a wide variety ranging from Herodotus to the novels of Dorothy L. Sayers.

I admire Terry Waite so much for how he dealt with being held captive for 4 years. This is a collection of extracts from some of the books that helped him through those years of captivity.

I went to see Terry Waite when he came to Waterstones Cheltenham on a promotional tour for his book, Taken On Trust. He‘s someone I very much admire, and one of the very few people for whom I would queue to get a book signed. So I have a signed copy of Taken on Trust.

On Sunday, my b/f and I went to a National Trust property, and in their second hand book store, I found a signed copy of the tagged book. I felt rather pleased!

Lcsmcat He‘s an amazing speaker. Stacked. 5y
TheEllieMo @Lcsmcat he is. I could listen to him for hours. Definitely top of the list on my answer to the “if you could invite anyone to a dinner party, who would you choose” question! 5y
JamieArc I can‘t resist anything with solitude in the title. Thanks for sharing! 5y
