My Ideal Boyfriend Is a Croissant
My Ideal Boyfriend Is a Croissant | Laura Dockrill
4 posts | 2 read | 1 reading | 5 to read
This honest, laugh-out-loud novel brimming with body positivity, bite-sized nuggets of feminism, and commentary on eating will have readers rooting for sixteen-year-old BB as she navigates her world while maintaining her plucky zest for life even in the most trying of times. It's a food diary. I have to tell the truth. That's the point. Sixteen-year-old Bluebelle, also known as BB or Big Bones, lives her life unapologetically. She loves life! She loves food! When BB has a worse-than-usual asthma attack, her mom insists she go to the doctor. There, she is told that she is overweight (no surprise) and prediabetic (big surprise) and must lose weight, move more, and keep a food diary. To get out of this immediate health crisis, she agrees to make an effort. Then a tragedy occurs in the family, and things get seriously complicated. Suddenly, losing weight and moving more are the least of her worries. As for the food diary, though, BB doesn't just document what she's eating, she documents what she's feeling--and she has a lot to say! A CLIP Carnegie Medal Children's Book Award Nominee

#UnpopularOpinion ...I really disliked this book. The humor was way too cheesy to me, and while the whole premise is to embrace however you look, I also didn‘t quite connect with the body-image positive vibes. Others loved this book, but it was so not for me.

I also sped up the reading...the book is over 9 hours on audio.

LibrarianRyan Yeah for the romp but boo for a bad book. 4y

"Hmm. I don't think I can lose weight."
Mum rolls her eyes. Again.
The nurse chuckles, kisses her teeth. "Of course you can, just move more and eat less."
Wait a minute. . . sorry, I think I just heard the words EAT LESS? She makes it sound so easy. In fact, i'm gonna tell her that, but with sarcasm.

Pickpick

Positively delightful. 16 year-old asthmatic and overweight BB is having a mid-teen life crisis. Her journey to balance her relationships with food, health, self-image, her future and family are so relatable yet hilarious. Only bit a wee unrealistic (but hey, I@was still rooting for it) was the love interest, but such an overall entertaining story and characters with whom we can all identify.

Today's roundup includes 2 really good books for reluctant MG readers: both nicely illustrated with fun stories. The latest Minecraft book is for all you gamers. Boy and Girl is billed as a little weird, but still looks interesting. I'm most excited about this body-image-positive story set in East London about a big girl who loves food, life, and her little sister. rretzler My younger son loved Baby Mouse (and Lunch Lady) when he was in elementary school. He‘s a big graphic novel reader and I‘ll admit we‘ve run out of good graphic novels for his age! 5y
BethFishReads @rretzler I need to read the earlier books. This one is less graphic novel and more heavily illustrated. 5y
