Ocean in Iowa
Ocean in Iowa | Peter Hedges
2 posts | 3 read | 4 to read
Scotty Ocean is turning seven years old, and he has announced earlier in his life that seven is going to be his year. It does turn out to be his year, but not the year he imagined. It is the year his mother leaves the family. At first, Scotty does astonishing things to get her to return. When he comes to believe she won't be moving back, he tries to replace her. Ultimately, he decides he must take drastic action to remain forever seven. Hedges brings to vivid life the unforgettable Ocean family: Scotty and his two older sisters; their father, at once stern and loyal; and their mother, Joan, a character of heartbreaking complexity. An Ocean in Iowa is a timeless book about the delicate balance of families. Beautifully crafted and constantly surprising, it explores the fragile contracts between parents and children, and what it really means to grow up.

Mehso-so

This was kind of a tough read. Well written and mostly engaging, Hedges captured very well what it was like to be a 7 year old dealing with hard things. The initial change in routine following parents splitting up is one so many of us can relate to and made me really feel for the MC and his siblings. That being said, there wasn‘t much else to this story and I was left wondering what the point was 🤷🏻‍♀️

My second #roll100 read complete!

Pickpick

I chose this as my next read after getting several recommendations once I finished What‘s Eating Gilbert Grape. It‘s not super long and I read most of it in one sitting last night. It‘s a story about 7-year-old Scotty Ocean, growing up in Iowa in 1969-1970. He‘s an odd sort of person and deals with his alcoholic mother abandoning the family in odd ways. Honestly, I wish it were longer. It‘s a perfect snapshot of suburban America in the late 60s ⬇️

JenlovesJT47 And it felt like I was there. It‘s a reminder how hard life could be for women during that time period, having little voice and being programmed to believe their sole purpose in life was to get married, have kids and be the perfect housewife while not pursuing their own dreams. The story ends rather abruptly but I still think it‘s worth reading. There are plenty of funny moments mixed with sad ones and others that are downright uncomfortable. 4⭐️ 3y
