When Hitler Took Cocaine and Lenin Lost His Brain: History's Unknown Chapters
When Hitler Took Cocaine and Lenin Lost His Brain: History's Unknown Chapters | Giles Milton
8 posts | 12 read | 17 to read
Obscure and addictive true tales from history told by one of our most entertaining historians, Giles MiltonThe first installment in Giles Milton's outrageously entertaining series, History's Unknown Chapters: colorful and accessible, intelligent and illuminating, Milton shows his customary historical flair as he delves into the little-known stories from the past. There's the cook aboard the Titanic, who pickled himself with whiskey and survived in the icy seas where most everyone else died. There's the man who survived the atomic bomb in both Hiroshima and Nagasaki. And there's many, many more. Covering everything from adventure, war, murder and slavery to espionage, including the stories of the female Robinson Crusoe, Hitler's final hours, Japan's deadly balloon bomb and the emperor of the United States, these tales deserve to be told.

Brief summaries of some bizarre historical events. I liked how the author wrote them, he didn‘t dwell on the salacious details too much, he just laid out the story.

If you like The Dollop podcast, you‘ll like this book (and vice versa).

Fascinating and obscure people and events in history. I had heard some of these stories before, but most were new to me. A quick and engrossing read.

Fun vignettes about bizarre and unknown pieces of history. Milton narrates his own book and has a podcast - “Unknown History with Giles Milton” . The third season focuses on WWII. Stange amount of cannibalism and prison escapes... fun and fast read.

britt_brooke I mean, I have to stack this. 5y
Booksnchill @britt_brooke was it the cannibalism???🤣🤣🤣🤣 5y

VERY INTERESTING.

While I did find that many of the stories, just over time, have become more well-known, that did nothing to make them less interesting. From Adolf Hitler being high on #cocaine to a man still fighting #WorldWar2 in the 1970's, to the #EmperorOfAmerica, the stories were engaging. They gave all the facts while staying short enough to not overwhelm.
