Carpentaria
Carpentaria: A Novel | Alexis Wright
5 posts | 7 read | 18 to read
IN the sparsely populated northern Queensland town of Desperance, battle lines have been drawn in the disputes among the powerful Phantom family of the Westend Pricklebush, Joseph Midnights renegade Eastend mob, and the white officials of neighboring towns. Trapped between politics and principle, past and present, the indigenous tribes fight to protect their natural resources, sacred sites, and, above all, their people. Steeped in myth and magical realism, Wrights hypnotic storytelling exposes the heartbreaking realities of Aboriginal life. Carpentaria teems with extraordinary, larger-than-life characters who transcend their circumstances and challenge assumptions about the downtrodden "other." The novel "bursts with life" (Daily Telegraph) as Alexis Wright re-creates the land and its people with mysticism, stark reality, and pointed imagination.

Got up in time to do Hour 12 challenge. I often say reading Carpentaria changed my life (actually just did on instagram) and it‘s true. I don‘t really know how to explain the small shift in perspective that occurred, but I‘m so glad I picked the biggest book on the reading list for that class assignment when no one else did.
#24in48

CarolynM I always mix this up with Xavier Herbert's Capricornia. I have to think about which one is being talked about😂 6y

What‘s that book titled a staggering work of immortal genius? It‘s on the wrong book! Carpenteria is a lyrically written, sweeping saga about the remote gulf community of Desperance, and the relations between the white and Aboriginal communities. Mysticism, anger, frustration and the deep ties of family are all here. This is a five star read - do yourself a favour and get your eyeballs on it.

(Could be used for 11 and 24 of #aussiesrule2018 )

Ok, so I know I said I'd use #LitsyPartyofOne to finish my current reads (some of which I started MONTHS ago), but how amazing does this book look?! I've picked it for #readaroundtheworld #ROTW #Australia this month and I'm so excited. #diversereads #ownvoices #indigenousauthors

Maybe I'll let myself start it if I finish my #ROTW #Syria pick from last month.

Marchpane This has been on my TBR for years - I look forward to seeing what you think of it! 6y
Natasha.C.Barnes @Marchpane Cool! I'd never heard of it till I was searching for an Australia book and wanted to find one from an indigenous author. I'm still working on my current reads for #litsypartyofone but I flipped though the first 2 chapters and even reading probably 6 full sentences got me really excited. Those 6 sentences had an east of Eden feel to them...we'll see. 6y

Some books by own voices/diverse authors in Australia for the #24in48 18 Hour challenge - diverse book recommendations.
I really highly recommend each of these books.
