The Boy Kings of Texas
The Boy Kings of Texas: A Memoir | Domingo Martinez
4 posts | 11 read | 26 to read
NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER AND NATIONAL BOOK AWARD FINALIST A lyrical and authentic book that recounts the story of a border-town family in Brownsville, Texas in the 1980's, as each member of the family desperately tries to assimilate and escape life on the border to become "real" Americans, even at the expense of their shared family history. This is really un-mined territory in the memoir genre that gives in-depth insight into a previously unexplored corner of America.

Great coming of age story told with Mexican-American twist. The candid nature of Diego Martinez's writing provides insight into both very carnal and alluring situations which ultimately make the book captivating and embarrassingly relatable. This book provides a unique perspective that makes it a must read and a beautiful peace of Mexican-American literature which analyzes the space between culture and patriotism in the lonestar state.

Overall, this was a great book. Like many memoirs (at least for me), it starts a little slow but it hooked me about 50-60 pages in. Sometimes funny, sometimes tragically sad, a beautiful memoir.

BekahB I read a couple of chapters of this and really liked it. Unfortunately I was juggling more books than I usually do and this ended up getting pushed back to my TBR pile. I still want to pick it back up though. 8y
