"A kind, warm, beautifully observed and deeply moving new play, a celebration of working-class familial imperfection and affection and a game-changing work for this gifted young playwright.Chicago Tribune Karam is in rare form here, showing a remarkable ear for the way families converse For all the characters woes, this is a warm, funny, sharply observed portrait of their abiding connections with one another. Time Out Chicago Breaking with tradition, Erik Blake has brought his Pennsylvania family to celebrate Thanksgiving at his daughters apartment in lower Manhattan. Unfolding over a single scene, this delirious tragicomedy (Chicago Sun-Times) by acclaimed young playwright Stephen Karam infuses the traditional kitchen-sink family drama with qualities of horror in his portentous and penetrating work of psychological unease (Variety), creating an indelible family portrait. Stephen Karams plays include Speech & Debate and Sons of the Prophet, a finalist for the 2012 Pulitzer Prize and the winner of the 2012 Drama Critics Circle, Outer Critics Circle, Lucille Lortel and Hull-Warriner awards for Best Play. Born and raised in Scranton, PA, he lives in New York City.

A reoccurring #readingresolution is to read more plays. This is a late entrance to the #stage, but I just finished unpacking my theater books and wanted to show them off. Top right is the newest plays On the tbr. Top left is a portion of the Shakespeare shelf. And the bottom is the newly shelved theater books

BarbaraBB You have so many!! I thought you were obsessed with the 1001 and museums but you have more obsessions 😍 6y
Liz_M @BarbaraBB I work in the Performing Arts and spent several years studying theater, with one semester in London too close to a street of used bookstores. 😁 6y
BarbaraBB @Liz_M That seems like a cool job and study. And it has given you this great collection! 6y

What a whirlwind weekend, filled with culture! (You fancy, huh?) My book club read “The Humans” this Fall & we went to see the play in Boston today. One of the characters was played by the actress who is Leslie Knope‘s mom (from “Parks & Rec”). Pretty cool! I‘m not much of a theater-goer, & liked reading the play more than watching it, but it was neat to see the set (a 2-level apt, where action takes place simultaneously on both floors) in action!

DivineDiana What fun! 🙂 6y

I‘ll be honest: I totally didn‘t want to read this. My book club (which is *supposed* to be a Short Stories book club) selected a play for this month, & I was bummin‘ hard. But I ended up loving it! It‘s a realistic/humorous/sad story about an Irish Catholic family “celebrating” Thanksgiving. The message is that mundane betrayal (along with the failure to connect & communicate) is more horrific than any fanciful horror story or bizarre nightmare.

Have you ever heard of “The Peppermint Pig”?

Apparently, it‘s a ritualistic smashing of a pig made of peppermint candy, for good luck, which can be done any time between Thanksgiving & Christmas. You take turns with your family, going around the table, smashing & saying what you‘re thankful for. Part of me wants to get one & start a new Thanksgiving tradition, but part of me feels really weird (/Czernobog-y) about smashing a pig with a hammer?

Ashley_Nicoletto 😂😂 I have similar feels. Like this is awesome.. but is it also strange 6y
monalyisha @Ashley_Nicoletto Right?! I think I‘m gonna do it (especially since I‘m not bringing anything else to the meal 😅). Wish me luck/minimal feelings of remorse! (edited) 6y
Soubhiville Sounds like fun! Maybe I just like breaking things... lol. 6y

Reluctantly starting my book club pick for Nov.

Interestingly, the epigraph includes 3 quotes about fear including this:

“The mask. Look at the mask!
Sand, crocodile, & fear above New York.”
-Garcia Lorca

I‘ve had recurring nightmares about crocodiles: most notably, when I was a kid & again in high school. Turns out, crocodiles mean “unlucky in love.” My parents divorced when I was 2 & my high school boyfriend was, well, a high school boy.🤷‍♀️

I am a theatre buff and try to read a few new plays each year. This won the 2016 Tony Award for Best Play and I finally read it tonight. It takes place in real time and is meant to be performed with no breaks in one act. A family gathers together for Thanksgiving and we get to witness their familial affections, offenses, and revelations unfold over the course of one evening. It is funny and searing and real. Excellent play.

LiteraryinLawrence The description sounds like August: Osage County. Is it like that? 7y
HeatherBookNerd @LiteraryinLititz it is not quite that brutal. I loved AOC. It's like a gruesome accident that you can't quit watching. The Humans is quieter. The family issues bubble to the surface more slowly, subtly, and tops off with an unexpected revelation. I can't quit thinking about it. 7y
